There was an interesting discussion just now about a misleadingly worded auction for a popular electronic item (the winning bidder ended up paying over $400 for an empty box and a warranty.) In general...would the fact that the misleading action was listed in the electronics/accessories category rather than in "shipping supplies" (or wherever you'd list empty boxes...?) be enough to get that seller booted for intent to defraud? I find it alarming that this person is still registered.

Rip-off artists like that end up costing their fellow eBay sellers a lot more than $400...

I hope that thread comes back, too--it was pretty fascinating

I just came home and looked at that auction again and, IN MY OPINION, it appears that the seller purposely misrepresented the item they were selling. The pic of the box appears to still be sealed by the manufacturer's tape. I sure do hope that the buyer gets his $400 back!!! Also, I hope that it was reported and gets looked at closely by the folks at eBay!

Everyone,

If someone would like to invite the seller of this auction, we can allow the number to be posted. Of course, there would be the customary 24 hour lockdown, but it would serve to reopen the discussion.

Just a suggestion, of course.

I have the auction number.

I will invite him to the original thread once Pat gets it restored.

Invite the buyer too---I don't think Pat is going to restore the thread unless the seller is invited---so you are in a Catch-22

I emailed the buyer when the other thread opened, thinking they might be interested. Has someone invited the seller?

Andiebelle

It is not unusual for sellers to list and sell empty boxes for collectible items. Sometimes, having an original box increases the value of the item significantly. Collectors will pay good money for original boxes.

Clearly, an honest seller will make sure and describe clearly that they are selling an empty box for that particular item.

I have invited the seller to the locked thread.

digitalman - what red flares?

I keep thinking there must be some sort of way to search for the name of the picture in other listings, but I can't figure out what it is.

Hmm, the 2000+ feedback seller's auctions look nothing like the "empty box" auction, and that person has great feedback.

I'd be willing to bet that the "empty box" seller stole the pic to use in the listing but didn't bother uploading it to his own web space.

Everyone,

I'm going to lock this thread for 24 hours or until we hear from the seller, whichever comes first.

This thread is unlocked as the CG's have been met.

I just got here and am playing catch up, so if there is more than one thread for the same subject, I may ask you to post to one only, to avoid confusion. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for following the CG's,

I will lock this one so you all can post the one cdnbooks has referenced.

Less confusion, for sure!

Thanks everyone.
