Hello, I'm a seller on eBay who's New Year's resolution was to 'wean' my buyers off of PayPal & then close my account which I did on Jan. 1st. This morning I received the usual "you've got cash" email message from PayPal. A lady I don't know has 'beamed' me $200 FOUR times! I tried emailing her, but it's an AOL & the mailbox is full (or so the returned email states). Maybe the money was sent to the wrong email address (?). It is just so weird that I've received this message FOUR separate times, each stating that $200 has been sent, it doesn't say what it's for, no item number, no nothing. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I've decided to do nothing else & just wait until I get an email about it. It couldn't possibly be some type of 'scam' could it? (I'm kinda paranoid about this). Thank you for your time!

Is the lady's name Betty Hill? If so, it may be a scam. According to a post on the OTWA PayPal board, there's a message about this on one of the boards at eBay.

If it is Betty Hill, don't answer the e-mails! It may be a password harvesting scam.

Although the AOL mailbox is full, did you do a search on ebay to see if it's registered on ebay? If it is, you could always pull their contact info and call them to find out what's up.

Please call PayPal, countryhorse or e-mail [email protected] with a copy of the e-mails from Betty Hill.

If enough people report this, perhaps PayPal will post a warning on its site (I can dream, can't I?) and save itself and some of its users a bunch of grief.

I even changed my eBay password just now...(silly, but I feel better). Oh I better tell my freinds & relatives who continue to use PayPal. I told them the risks...but did they listen? NO!! I didn't even know about this scam...I need to look at these boards every single day!!

I am so sorry to hear this, I had just completed an email to a less than happy buyer who wanted to use PAYPAL and I had told her that I would not and have not used Paypal because of just this problem and others. This really reinforces my concerns.

I would like to add that if you do use Paypal please do not use the same password that you use for ebay...it makes it just that much easier for these bad guys to get your information. There was another thread yesterday dedicated to this subject.

Wouldn't it just be a great thrill if the PO delivered on time, ebay offered refunds for good sellers and there were no deadbeats, or scam artists? Oh well, I can dream can't I?

I forwarded one of these emails to Damon & he emailed back and said he sent this information to the fraud group. I liked it so much better in the "old" days, too, when all my payments came in the mail...like Christmas every day...haha..Thank you all again so VERY much!

This is also a good reminder for those of us who do use PayPal to always check to make sure the money is in our accounts before shipping anything. The "you have cash" emails are easily faked.

I too, am so sorry to hear about all this fraud; and it all re-inforces my feeling good about not accepting Online Payments, of any kind...it is just too risky.

Thanks so much, for the info on this scam.

Of course, I will continue to use PayPal, 99% of my customers use and prefer it, and I do too. Never had a problem, which is more than I can say for the other systems like PayDirect at Yahoo, and BillPoint at eBay.

Damon did start a thread on this very scam on Monday or Tuesday evening. Actually listed the email in the thread and warned everybody about it.

I too continue to use Paypal and have had no problems thus far.
