My mom has this planter and wants to know if it's worth listing on eBay. I can't figure out what it is...the "flowers" seem to be old-style stuff, sort of like celluloid, but the planter part appears to be more recent. However, the stuff those flowers are stuck in appears to be really old, and it's in so tight you can't pull any of it out! The bottom of the planter is marked 78/4, with writing underneath that looks like more like Tahn than John, with a D underneath that. I'd appreciate any info--including what this type of flower is called. I've seen them before in old-style planters and don't know what the material is.
(edited to try to get the image to show...sigh...I thought I had this figured out!)

I have *no* idea about the flowers. But the pot looks to be European. Maybe English or German. I can't even hazard a guess about the age. Really can't see the form, glaze, or decoration very well with the flowers.
I think you are right about those flowers not being original to the pot.

Unless your mother is really attached to it, put it on Ebay and see what happens - you never know. I've listed things that I didn't think would bring more than $10 and they brought $100. As the saying goes ... One man's trash is another man's treasure.
