Had a package go lost. It was sent Letter Post Airmail over a month ago to Toronto.
I am wondering, and haven't seen this question before, because it has to go through customs, if anyone has ever traced a package through customs by using the number on the customs form (which I keep for my records)
For anyone from Canada...is there is a central office where this could be looked into? I have asked my buyer to check into it, but want to do some of the legwork on my end.

I am having the same problem, shipped over a month ago to Canada...that web site doesn't say much, any other things to consider? If it's being held by Canada customs how would you know?

Apparently, that customs #, from the form, is no good outside the US. The number is only for use by our post office. Once it hit's Canada, they afix a new form and new number to it.
tc61 -- I spoke to someone in Canada who said that after 30 days, they can try to track it down to see if it's being held by customs.

Canada Post is responsible for delivering the mail, not Canada Customs.
Canada Post acts on behalf of Canada Customs in the case of all mail delivered via an international postal service (such as USPS), so the parcel never leaves their stream of delivery.
If a parcel has been forwarded to an official customs agency (not likely unless it involved illegal stuff), they will notify either the sender or receiver.
There is no way to trace international parcels even with tracking numbers. Parcels can however just show up or even be returned to sender months later (and who knows what exciting voyage they've been on!)

Oops, looks like I missed this one.
Genie9 is right on the money.
Once a parcel leaves the US & enters Canada, the tracking # on the Customs form is pretty much useless. If it's sitting at Customs, you might get lucky, if it's left their hands, there's no telling where it's ended up.
I had a parcel that went missing in the US last year, it arrived back here in Canada 4 months later. Go figure.
