Hi, I am new to ebay and have a big question? I recently sold a plush backpack to someone on ebay and stated in my description that buyer pays s/h. I didnt state a price for s/h because I honestly did not know how much the shipping would be. All the zones and prices by weight really confuse me. So I waited until after someone won and then found out the shipping price and added my handling fee of $1 to cover all the fees that Ebay, packaging and Paypal take out! Well She was not happy about that, she has accused me of being an illegal seller on Ebay stating that it is Illegal to not list a s/h price. And basically telling me that she has turned me in to Ebay and that they are going to kick me off Ebay. I am 8 months pregnant, and she has upset me and made me cry, so I refunded her all her money back, and told her I didnt want to deal with her anymore. She still is threatening me and telling me I did something illegal on Ebay. I was just wondering if anyone else can tell me if what I did was illegal. And if so where does it say that in Ebays sellers rules.

She knows you're new and is taking advantage of that for whatever reason. Your going to deal with all types on auctions. You did nothing wrong. Her threats are unwarranted because you stated buyer pays S&H. She should have contacted you first and asked about the cost since it was driving her to insanity.

hhsales...Just relax; this too shall pass. I am a little confused (doesn't take much, though). You said you refunded all of her money back to her? She paid you and then did't want to go through with it? It is NOT illegal not to put your s & h on your auction site; but these days it is a good idea. If you feel something is over 5 lbs. just state that in your tos and that you will need their zip code for actual shipping. Personally, I never charge a handling fee or Ebay fees; a big turn off. I primarily sell on Ebay. With the shipping rates up the way they are, I do think that a lot of buyers will just pass up your auction if something is not said about shipping like how much? how much does it weigh? And NEVER say that you are charging Ebay fees. You will be alright.

I always pass on auctions that do not state the exact fee for shipping/handling but you did not do anything illegal.

Hi...I have a pet peeve about shipping and handling info on auctions. I understand that sometimes you do not know the cost of shipping, but if you are going to add handling fees...that fee should be listed in the auction. I don't mind paying reasonable handling costs, but I have gotten to the point that I just pass on every auction that says "Buyer pays shipping and handling fees". I just don't have the time to e-mail these sellers and find out if their handling fee is $1.00 or $20.00. I was stung when I first starting buying (I sell now too) by winning a mirror for $6.00 and not asking the shipping and handling charge....seller was going to charge me $20.00 for the shipping and handling for a 2 pound item.....NOT! I would suggest that you at least note in your auctions what your handling fee is... but that is just my opinion. As for your bidder that is threatening you with e-mails...it sounds like its just as well that you don't have to deal with her anymore. Some people are just impossible to deal with! Good luck on future selling...Not all bidders are like her...I promise

One other little thing that I am confused over...You say you are new to ebay and can't really figure out all the zones, prices, ect., yet on another thread you state that you have been on Ebay for three years?? Hmmmmmmmmm

In response to your Question!

I share this computer with my sister and Brother-in-law. My Brother-in-law has sold for years on Ebay. I have not! That would have been his post, not mine! I was told by him that it was OK, but then that is what got me into this whole mess. And I really at this point dont beleive anything he says. He acts like he knows everything yet I have this person pissed at me because of what he says. So I thought I would take it to someone else and find out.
Boy you people all jump to conclusions before you ask questions. I myself would never judge anyone without knowing the whole story. Because things are not always as they seem.

Wow...the pregnancy horemones: they are a-raging lol..and that is okay, they are supposed to be. I was not trying to jump all over you, but if you would just take a little step back, you will see that this was very confusing for us. You did the right thing by coming hear and asking for help (and I hope you do in the future) instead of just taking your BIL's word for things. I wish you the very best; my daughter is 8 months pregnant (due in two weeks) and I know what she is feeling right now. If you can look over this, I hope the advice given to you here has helped you. Lots of luck to you, honey, and give that new baby a big smooch from this old nana. Janet (PS, you really can get your own username for this site)

Hello hhsales

After reviewing your auctions & ME page I see two things you should fix.

1. You state on your ME page:

You are given a S/H rate in the item description.

Which is not true for ALL of your auctions.

2. You also mention that part of what the handling fee covers is your eBay fees. Not a great idea, I'd remove that part.

3. Now that you've posted on an eBay chat board, most likely someone will report you to eBay over your big honking YAHOO link to your other auctions. I'd remove that as well.

4. You can't share AW ID's on this forum. You need to create your own ID. Otherwise no one knows who the hell they're talking to from one post to the next.

BTW - I rather doubt ebay will kicking you off because of this 1 complaint. The bidder should have asked about the "handling" fee before she placed a bid.

I'm glad you clarified, but you must understand we are not mind readers here.
All we know is what we read.
By all means get your own user ID for posting here.
Your dear brother in-law with his 3 years of wisdom should have been able to tell you that much.
Good luck with your eBay endevors....we all made mistakes when we first started out.
That is what makes you a better seller...learn from those mistakes.

Again,
GOOD LUCK!

hhsales...it really can be fun. Once in a while you WILL run into a jerk (both buyers and sellers), but that is part of doing business. What kind of shipping do you use? Whatever it is state it in your auctions. I always say "Buyer to pay actual priority shipping; never a handling charge"..If I know the weight (I usually do because I bought a 10 lbs. postal scale) I state exactly what the charge will be. If you really want to charge a handling fee (really limiting yourself imo) then state $1.00 handling fee or whatever it is. If you know it is over 5 lbs. then you will need their zip code at auctions end. Keep it very short & very precise and you should have very few problems with the shipping end. What Reddeer said: exactly right especially about that Yahoo thing. Hope this helps.

Did your BIL create your ME page AND your auctions?

I suggest you take some responsibility for your OWN auctions.

You asked for advice, and that's mine.

ok hhsales,
You posted while I was posting. BIL needs the new AW ID, or ban him from your puter.

Don't get discouraged, keep asking questions here, everyone is very helpful. I've learned a TON of stuff by coming to this board.

If'n I was you I'd be more concerned at the moment with the links on your auctions. Not only are they too big [I'll post the eBay rules/link here in a minute] BUT, as soon as eBay gets wind of that Yahoo link on your auctions, they will end every last one of the auctions you have currently up.

As a buyer I will not buy anything where the shipping terms are so vague. Unless the seller specifies a fixed amount or actual shipping then I want to know how much handling will be. If I don't get a response from the seller before the auction closes then I will not bid on it. If it is an item where many are offered on Ebay then I will just pass on the ones with vague terms and go for the ones that say what shipping/handling will be. I rarely bid on anything with over $1.00 handling.

As a seller I list heavy items with "actual shipping via UPS." Smaller items are weighed and then a fixed price is listed. All items are sent with delivery confirmation unless the buyer chooses insurance and that is all spelled out in the TOS. The fixed price is usually the shipping and confirmation total rounded up to the next half dollar or dollar. Sometimes a nickle for a handling fee and sometimes 45 cents.
