A recent posting regarding how valuable it is to do research in eBay completed auctions did spark a question in my mind...

Has anyone, or any 3rd Party company/website ever tried to create an Archive of Completed Auctions... by category, perhaps ?

The 30-day history, is OK... but it sure would be nice to go back 6-months or more to see if some rare items were ever listed and what selling price they ended at.

I'm wondering if eBay even provides an API, or would have a problem with someone asking to do that?

I realize the potential drawbacks :
1. The database would be HUGE.
2. The argument that the information could be stale. (i.e. how valuable is it to know that last years "hot" beanie baby sold for $100, and now it can be had for $10 ?)

Just curious if anyone has thought of, or done this somewhere/somehow ?
