I had an item up for sale (less than $10) that ended this past weekend. I had put it in my auctions to be relisted through AW later this week. Last night I received this e-mail:

hello, I see that you may still have the XXX widget, I was watching it on e-bay, but did not get to bid on it. If you stillhave it or will relist it let me know. I love it!

Quick as lightning, I put that widget up with a BIN price and e-mailed her the URL so she wouldn't be able to pass it up seeing that she loves it so much.

I'm sure you won't be surprised that she didn't jump on that sucker right away. I guess she wanted me to sell it to her off-line at less than my cost. I doubt I will ever hear from her again.

Edited to add that if I do hear from her it will be because someone else beat her to the BIN!

The same thing has happened to me and it always leaves me puzzled. I sell a lot of nonfiction books. Twice lately I've had people email me to check the index to see if their "great grandfather Joe Blow" is mentioned in the book. That if he was they would bid on it. In both cases the person they were inquiring about was in the book and I let them know this. But, you guessed it, they did not bid.

Several times I have received emails from people wanting to know if I have another one and, as I didn't, I would check my sources and find one and buy it. I advise the person of this fact and every time they have either not responded at all or advised that they changed their mind (even though they, OF COURSE, really really had to have it!) I stopped doing that entirely!

I've had the opposite experience. This past month, I've had several bidders who bid on and won X ask if I also have Y and Z, and they've all ordered and paid for the extra items.

Update: Feeling a little bit on the sassy side, I e-mailed this potential buyer "taunting" her for not bidding yet. A few hours after I sent the e-mail, someone came along and placed a bid on the item and it was not her! They didn't exercise the BIN option so it is still in the listing for anyone to bid. This morning my original inquirer has bid on the item so now I'm settling in for a bidding war.
