I've been watching an item I bid on for days. About a half hour ago there was 54 minutes to close and I had been outbid by $1.00.

I just went back to bid and "OUR SITE IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE"!!!

This is getting VERY OLD!!!!! And is taking the FUN out of EBAY for me.

I agree I finally have something that has had over 1500 page hits (my personal best since they usually never get over 50-85) and was real excited. We were going to watch the closing few minutes. First time I was excited as I figured with all the page hits and only 12 bids it was going to be fun!Greed-Bay just took care of that. Thanks Meg

CHECK THIS OUT.

*** eBay Tops Customer Satisfaction Survey ***

Earlier this week we received news that eBay has been selected the co-winner of the first ever Best-in-Class Customer Satisfaction award. The award was announced by Satmetrix Systems following a survey of businesses and consumers. eBay consistently generated customer satisfaction scores significantly higher than 8.0 on a scale of zero to 10.

eBay wishes to extend a sincere thanks to the sellers on the site who help make eBay’s overall community one of the most satisfied in the world. We also would like to congratulation our customer support team that was recognized for its first rate customer service.

Everyone at eBay works very hard to make the user experience the best it can be. This award is another indication that our efforts are paying off!

Regards,
eBay

What is old is the whining of bidders who wait until the very last minute to place their bids.

If you want to snipe every auction you bid on, then there is obviously going to be a risk that, a) the site might be down, b) your local server might be down, c) the seller might pull their auction rather than watch it go down in flames

So why complain about it? It's your choice not to place a proxy bid at a sensible time during the 7 days the auction was available!~

Of course eBay's down... I was just getting ready to list my first item in about 3 weeks (nasty bout of the flu, etc). Hit the "post" button in my auction management software and got an error page. *sigh*

edited to fix misspelling

Yeah UPRIVER. I guess you are right. Everybody should place their maximum bid a week early.

That would significantly drive up the price, take the fun out of getting a deal and be contrary to the way I, and many others, like to bid but if it makes you happy that's the way we should do it.

Why don't we just change the ENTIRE auction format to a week long TAG SALE!!!!

We should all have to bid like you think we should rather than how WE prefer to do it.

Sure it's the point, for if you'd placed a proxy bid when you had a chance, you'd of had a solid shot at the item.

Why don't you try logging in to the eBay UK site? Does anyone have that link handy?

Isn't it wrong to blame the bidder here? Its ebays duty to keep the site running, not the buyers or sellers. In this case both lost out.

That's was not my point at all, whinecooler.

Bidders are welcome to do as they please in my book, bid high, bid low, bid early, bid late. Sometimes they win, sometimes I as a seller do, probably evens out in the long run.

My point is, after 3 years on eBay I certainly know by now their system is imperfect. It may be annoying, but it is a consistent fact of life.

So if a bidder chooses to bid late (which is 100% an ok thing to do), then live with your decision, which carries some degree of risk that you will not end up being able to complete the bidding you were hoping to do.

Just don't whine about it, that's what dogs are supposed to do, not people.

Nobody's blaming the bidder here, just as nobody should be blaming ebay. There is no 100% guarantee that I am aware of that ebay will keep it's site running flawlessly. Bidders should take it into account that the site can and will go down periodically, and bid accordingly.

Chum:

Not blaming the bidder at all. We loves bidders, more the better!

But if you elect to just bid late, eBay may elect to not let you bid at all. If someone doesn't like that then they should consider a different method of bidding (like earlier in the auction), but they should accept that as part of the risk of sniping.

A valid reason not to place a high proxy bid is shilling. After so many times bidding my maximum early and getting it bid to the max a few minuted later by a "0" feedback user that just joined, I don't trust the system anymore. My protection is not to let that happen. Competitive bidding is one thing, but shilling still exists and we've got to take proactive measures to defend against it.

It is eBay's responsibility to keep their site up and running. They are not keeping their end of the bargain at this moment. If outages are a risk that we should be expected to deal with, then that should be the reason that eBay lists for a bidder to enter their proxy bid early.

IMHO - Riz

When I have a problem with acess the first thing I do is try E-bay united kingdom more often then not I can access the auctions that I want to snipe from there even though the e-bay U.S.A. is down!!

Why do so many posters here feel the need to micro manage a situation and tell us what we could have done, should have done, might have done, what we should have considered, should have known etc. etc. etc.

The fact is EBAY was down. Yes it CAN and does happen so are we all supposed to place every bid thinking ,"well ebay might go down so I'll place a high proxt bid and then if Ebay does go down maybe everybody else will get shut out in the lsast minute and I'll get a great deal"?

I'm sorry but this kind of logic stretches the bounds of credible thinking.

I seriously doubt MOST people even CONSIDER these things when bidding. EBAY IS SUPPOSED TO BE AVAILABLE for BIDDING. THAT IS THEIR FUNCTION.

There is an implied trust that things will BE AS THEY SHOULD BE, which is "working".

I just lost ANOTHER AUCTION because I could not access "MY EBAY" to check my bids.

I just received an OUTBID NOTICE.

Again beat by less that a BUCK by the ONLY OTHER BIDDER.

This blows. What happened to the AUTO EXTENSION of auctions ending durring outages??

Upriver. I don't mind disagreements but you disagreeing with how I, and many others, place bids is just plain irrelevent.

The topic is "Ebay is down again and I can't bid", not "please tell me every possible thing I should consider when placing an auction".

You are not so much disagreeing with me as you are reinventing the question.

If you want to inform bidders of ALL of their considerations while bidding, perhaps a new catagory entitle "627 things to consider when placing a bid" would be the place to do that.

Whinecooler, WHY did you post the topic if you didn't want any comments?

Nobody is blaming you, just pointing out there are options to your bidding habits that might make life easier for you; as to losing an auction seems to cause you great persoanl grief.

I enjoy sniping myself, but know the risks when I dedcide to snipe instead of using the proxy bid and then not come here and WHINE about losing an auction.

S**t Happens, so just wait until the next time your item is up... part of the excitement of the hunt.
