This is a stumper. It looks like old hickory wood. I have a view closed and open. I am lost on this one...could not even guess at it.
Can you?

Drying rack?

Two chair backs which were not meant to be wed?

Could it be a Beach Chair? The 2nd pic would have it sitting wrong for this. The one bar would be buried under the sand? Is it at an angle that that would work?

newguy is right----I had one and it looks just like that---but it is probably not an antique.

oh---and to make it work as a footrest--the squarish piece of wood that is on the floor is kind of tucked into or propped against the seat of a chair (padded works best)--then you just put your feet up....a pillow is needed under the calves so ya don't get ridges

It needs some rubber do-hickies on the the 2 ends that rest on the floor so it doesn't slip.

It's defintely a men's valet!

The pic at http://members.aol.com/zeenza/whatisit.JPG is the correct position.

It's a valet for midgets...it's only about 2 feet tall.

Could it have something to do with carding wool or the spinning, weaving process?

the ends of the dowels make it look like there's a piece missing, possibly that is a duplicate of the other side...then it would be a U shape.

Or...if a single piece fit across it, it would be exactly shaped like the top half of an outdoor lounge chair, where the seat-back adjusts from a sitting-up position to a reclined position.

why oh why does nobody believe me??? It really is a folding portable leg rest/ foot stool.

My sister bought one for my father when he had to elevate his foot for some medical reason---it moved from chair to chair with ease--the one in the picture is absolutely identical to the one we had/have.

She bought it about 15 years ago---and it was brand new at the time---the last time I saw it it was out in the garage trying to mimic an antique.

Thanks everyone for your input. What a weird footrest...couldn't they come up with a better idea than this? I guess it's firewood now. LOL

zeenza -

Just goes to show you..."One man's firewood is another man's footrest." How much you want for it? LOL!

edited to add a smilie in case no one else laughed at my joke.

Foot rests were called "gout stools" a hundred years ago.

Zazzie: "Maybe it's a valet for midgets - it's only about 2 feet tall."

Maybe it is a footrest for extraordinarily tall midgets?!

This is a footrest for treating gout. It holds a pillow and keeps the toe elevated. (Obscurity pulled from the dark recesses of my mind)
