Hey all... Am I on crack or has anyone else noticed that eBay is been crap lately? I mean, I've seen it crash out on a Sun. night but not on a Wed. night, Thurs. night etc.... Did I miss the "Expect Delays" sign somewhere? Did they change their address? What gives? Are they not making enough money to buy their way out of the problems?
Thanks all, just my little rant session.

The rant session is OK because your take is like lots and lots of others. I came over here expecting to find lots of comments - (and maybe a few answers?) about performance and how come so few over here? I have a cable modem and the last 2 weeks have been atrocious!!! I am going to sign off eBay for a few days because I just can't deal with the performance - from 30 seconds to infinity to load a single page! It is horrible, horrible, horrible and eBay doesn't even want to acknowledge that there is a problem. So that's my gripe session too!

fvbest where are you calling from? I'm also on cable in the North East and I've never seen such slow access to eBay.

RoadRunner here in the Northeast, too. Last two weeks have been terrible. Funny, though, dialup through Juno is working okay. Um, I never thought I would say it, but it's actually fast compared to cable. And why is it just eBay? All the other sites I go to are working just fine.

It doesn't seem to be affecting all cable users, though. I've had reports from friends in the western part of Mass. that connection to eBay was fine. Interesting. When I do a traceroute to eBay, I get a high ping of 90 ms...although I can't traceroute directly to eBay, because they hide their IP to avert DOS attacks. Seems to be a problem either with Exodus or with eBay itself.

And yes, eBay is the only site I'm having trouble accessing too.

I'm on the Mass. South Shore...with ATT Roadrunner cable...same problem. So slow, I'm not even going to attempt listing anything.

No slowdown any place but eBay.

Very slow here in Ohio & I also have RR cable. I wrote to Ebay on the 16th and this was their response on the 19th:

Hello Janet,

Thank you for writing in regarding the slow speeds you've experienced
accessing our site today. We have looked into the issue and found that
the problem is with the high traffic on the internet.

Currently the internet traffic conditions for North America are not
good. You can check the internet traffic in North America through this

It seems very strange to me that Ebay is the only site I have this problem with...everything else very fast.

I would suggest that everyone call up their ISP (which in this case seems to be ATT/Roadrunner) and have them open a ticket up on this issue. If the tech that you speak to tells you that it's outside the ATT/Roadrunner service and they can't do anything, have them [b]escalate[/b} the call. They should do this without hesitation. It would help if you can have the traceroute in an email, ready to send to them.

I've learned that, unfortunately, the only way to get these issues resolved is to keep harping on them. Your ISP should be your advocate in issues like this.

In the Northeast the Phone # is 1-888-MEDIAONE.

I don't understand this... AW is right next to eBay...correct? Wouldn't my connection to AW and eBay go through the same routers, etc.?

My ignorance is vast about the Internet...so what am I missing?

Check this site out. Run a speed test on some of the sites in CA & see what you come up with.

Thanks, reddeer...

I just tried your San Jose link. Did it 3 times and found quite a variation. Got 554.3, 498.2, and 651.8.

Dunno what this means, lol! I really didn't understand the traceroute stuff on your other link. I typed in eBay.com, got many series of numbers...then it stalled and I got loads of asterisks. Seemed like it couldn't connect? Maybe I did it wrong. I've heard about traceroutes, but never have done one.

toke, eBay hides their IP address to keep people from ping bombing their site, and make it less likely for a Denial of Service attack.

From here in Boston, I can do a traceroute to the first 15 or so hops, then get the same series of timeouts that you get. What I do is copy and paste the traceroute into an email and send it to tech support at Mediaone.

It can't hurt to call ATT/Mediaone/RR either.

Aha! Okay, I used IP-Plus on reddeer's site and got lists of numbers and such up to and including the number 9...then the timeouts. So that would be 9 "hops"?

I'll go copy that and stick it in an email. Thanks!

My guess is that the router that's taking you into eBay has a log jam. I haven't had any problems getting around on eBay for the past week.

Let me add a couple of new developments to this horrible mess! I have multiple computers all sitting right side by side in my office. One machine has an old dial-up phone connection that I used before my MediaOne upgrade - and which I haven't used in months. I fired up the old dial up connection and went to eBay and have no problems whatsoever! Sure its not as fast, but it doesn't hang, its reliable, etc. etc. ( Now I know why I can be beat in the last few minutes of an auction! ) So I called my MediaOne service rep. He says that they are aware of the problem, that it is somewhere between MediaOne and Sprint and that they are working on it. I thanked him because he was the first person who admitted they knew about the problem! Multiple conclusions here: 1.) The problem may NOT be exclusively eBay's. 2.) The problem does appear to be associated with MediaOne in one way or another. 3.) Somebody is aware and trying to do something about it. 4.) If you are a MediaOne customer, if it is at all possible, the only sane way you can get to eBay is through a dial-up phone connection. So I felt I got somewhere here. Keep plugging! I never knew that that old dial-up connection would come in handy sometime.

Hi Everyone,

Ebay has turned into a DEAD turtle here in North Central Ohio.
Ebay has been slow since about March 8th. And unbelievably slow in the evenings and on weekends.
I thought is was a Roadrunner problem because ebay would slow down, die, then my modem lights would flash and I couldn't connect to the internet at all.
All the other web sites I visted were OK.
On Sat. 3/17 and last night 3/23, I checked ebay with rr against my husband's dialup.
His dialup was 12 seconds FASTER than rr with ebay and when we tested other sites rr and dialup were about even. His speed was about the same as mine. (Me 245kbps.-- him 161kbps.)
RR came out to my house on 3/19 and gave me a new modem. They sent the line crew out on 3/20 and checked the lines in my area. They told me they detected a slight problem and were going to fix it. I don't know if they did or not, because I'm still having the same problem and I don't know whose fault it is.
Ebay started out very slow this morning--now it's DEAD!
Last night it took at 4 minutes for me to totally download search pages and the announcements and help pages.
If the problem is rr, why would eBay be soooo much slower and the other sites I visit be just a teentsy-weentsy bit slower?
I just went to ebay (12:15 PM EST) and it's the slowest it's ever been. I tried to download the search page where I usually hang out. After 5 MINUTES, all I had was the normal ebay stuff up and the very top of the page and the ad. THAT'S IT!
Then I went to a site RR told me to go to to check my speeed. It's called toastnet.com. My speed was 286kbps, so I don't know what the heck is causing my problem. But I sure am getting way behind with my auctions.
I wrote ebay support last week. They said it wasn't them and told me to clean out my cache. I manually clean out my cache every day, so that's not the problem.
It's not my pc because every other place I go to on the web is loading as usual.
AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!

Thanks for letting me vent,
Bonnie
