I just got email on PayPal's Winning Bid Notifications a bit ago. The service is now active. They will send winning bid notifications to your eBay auction winners in less than an hour of the auction's close. If PayPal has your eBay password the feature is on by default. I suggest you log on to your PayPal account go to 'profile' then 'Bidder Notification' and check it out, you can turn it off, or on, or edit the content of the notification that will be sent to your winning bidders.
It was a rather lenghty email so I'll just include the 'meat' of the email incase you didn't get it.
If you wish to customize the text in your Winning Bidder Notification emails, simply login to your PayPal account, click on the "Profile" subtab, and then choose the "Bidder Notification" link. Here you will be able to set all of your preferences for this feature.
This is also the page where you can also turn off notification emails; simply deselect the checkbox on the bottom of the page to have PayPal not send automatic emails to your winning bidders. Winning Bidder Notification -- like all of PayPal's automated auction tools -- can be turned off or back on at any time you choose.
You can customize your WBN by adding up to 1,024 characters max to the body of the email.
Those without accounts can get info from here Winning Bidder Notification
EDITED TO ADD:
A second email came which states:
Yesterday we sent you an announcement that PayPal was introducing a new auction tool for sellers called Winning Bidder Notification. This free service automatically emails buyers when they win your auctions. The emails are fully customizable and include a link that buyers can use to pay you with PayPal. Since you've used PayPal's automated auction tools (such as AutoLink and Instant Purchase) in the past, we wanted to make sure you were aware of this new time-saving feature.
However, yesterday's announcement needs to be clarified in two respects:
* First, Winning Bidder Notification is not currently live. We expect it to launch within the next few days.
* Second, we will not turn on this feature unless you request it. Once it goes live, we will prompt you to choose whether you would like to activate it when you login to your account.
We're sorry if our announcement caused you any inconvenience, and we hope that this new feature will be useful for you. Thanks for making PayPal the world's #1 online payment service!

Hi uaru,
Thank you for posting it. I was going to post it, but you beat me to it.

Thanks Uaru,
I use paypal, but I don't normally use the other message board. I like to use my own notices, so I will go turn it off.

I just got off of the phone with a very nice Paypal Rep.
BUT.... the REASON I called was because I am FURIOUS about PayPal ADDING a feature to my account without prior notice or PERMISSION that affects MY CUSTOMERS!!
I'm SO ANGRY that I will spend today RE-evaluating BILLPOINT. I will likely DROP Paypal in my listings and give BILLPOINT another try. (depending on what their "features" are and whether or not BillPoint/eBay can leave my customers alone too) *sigh*
Paypal should NOT have Opt-In it's user base on this one. SHAME ON PAYPAL!!
I hope others call and ream you all out for this one too!
MAN, I am SO LIVID!!!!!

I am soooo glad you posted this. I did not receive the email from PayPal about this, so those notices would have gone out along with my regular EOA notices. Just how stupid and disorganized can you look?? I personally don't like auto-notices, so I have my own, fill-in-the-blank one that seems to work pretty well. Thanks again for posting this and saving my blood pressure from going through the roof!

I just happened to see this and haven't been to PayPal yet. Are you saying that if they have our password, they are sending end of auction notices to our customers? How can they do that??? They don't know any of the particulars! I see that as Spam in it's sneakiest form! Sheezh!

I too was really ticked off that Paypal automatically would send out a notice.
Yes it makes one look disorganized, but also given shipping issues, Canada and U.S. and multiple purchases etc.....
what a potenital mess.
I opted out, but I had to reread to find something that should have been very easy to find in their email.

Here's the paypal number to call and complain:
1-888-221-1161
There are also some threads on this topic AND the new PayPal FEE INCREASE going into effect on the OTHER Auction discussion community forum. (I don't think we're suppose to mention them HERE by name though) *sigh*

Especially if Paypal is INCREASING THEIR FEES on all transactions....
Let's see... Paypal automatically SPAMS our winners with the PAYPAL payment option within minutes of the auction closing AND rakes a little extra money off the top of EVERY Transaction (I think it's something like .30 cents in addition to the 2.2% for credit card purchases) for providing the Online payment service.?.?.?.?
Uhm... NO THANKS!

The idea of PayPal offering the use of automated Winning Bidder Notifications is a good one. Opting people in automatically is stepping over the line!!! Shame on you PayPal!

WTF ????
NOW I understand the two nutty bidders that wrote to me last night about the "bills" that I sent them from PayPal.
I didn't send nuthin', and didn't know WTF they were talking about.
I been defending PP from day one, but if they are tracking my auctions, and sending emails to my bidders without ME initiating it, I will close my PP account, and take my $10,000.+ a month in PP payments to someone else!
Bad business Damon! Bad Business!

I woke up this morning to this notification, and dottie, I agree. I am furious that PayPal has the brass cahounas to do this without asking me! I just wish all of the services would keep their cotten-picken-hands the h*ll offa my auctions! It is like we are a buncha prosties out there and da boss man keeps asking for more and more money, and taking more and more license with our initial work. For crying out loud, leave us alone already!! Paypal is just using us again( and up to this point, for me, I have had no big problems with them)to urge people to use their services. I don't like it one bit, and you can bet they are going to get a phone call from me today! And the thing about it is, they make you go through 5 steps to uncheck the notification they checked for us in the first place!! To all of the services...Ask me first, before you meddle with my auctions. leave me and my customers alone! Because you do a service for me, and a service that I am paying through the nose for, does not give you the right to go in and meddle any way you see fit!
edited because I am p*ssed off and can't spell

I'm with Dottie and furkidmom --this is unbelievable.
Why weren't we notified by e-mail before this change took place, so we could head off the problem?
Of course, I'm still waiting for an answer to my questions about the new variable rate we're being charged by PayPal as a part of the fee increase. Fat lot of good it does to post questions in the PayPal forum.
Just in case I can get some answers here, I'm posing the questions again:
1.} How often will the rate change?
2.} Is the rate tied to some well-known index [preferably one that's trackable online}?
3.} Will the current rate be posted prominently and regularly updated on the PayPal site?

vargas> ok, I have looked all over the place and I missed something here along the line. Please tell me where I can find information about these new variable Paypal rates you are talking about. I have looked all over the place at all forums. A link would be helpful, and thanks! (something tells me the hole in my pocket is about to be enlarged!)

Where are these other discussion at regarding WBN and increased fees (which is increasing only for non-credit card payments - credit card payment fees remain at 2.2% plus $.30 if payment is over $15)
I looked in the "Other Auction Sites" area but didn't see them..

Wow - I look like an idiot! I received the e-mail from Paypal this morning and turned off the notification, but e-mails had aldready went out on a ton of auctions that closed yesterday! A lot of these buyers had already paid and now they are wondering why they are getting another e-mail when they have already paid. What a mess - we should have received some advance warning about this!!

Well I want to check in and give my vote of PISSED OFF! No big deal, I was that before this happened
I posted the new fees in the PayPal fourm under other services. You can see it there. Currently it is raising eCheck fees from 1.6 to 2.2%
I not sure how many of you will get it but wait till you get the PayPal debit card in the mail you did not ask for (assuming you did not).

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seems to me that you have to fill out a form for them to send out automatic WBNs. Here is what it says:
>How does it work?
All you need to do is enter your eBay User ID and password in the form provided. As your auctions close, your winning bidders will immediately be sent an email notifying them that they have won, and giving them a link where they can pay you through PayPal. <
If you don't register for the service, it doesn't seem to me that it is done for you. I checked my own account and it said the WBN feature is turned off, and I never told Paypal to either turn it off OR on.

I might add I turned mine off at 7:00 this morning. Befor I did I filled in the message box that "I hate PayPal and prefer they use Billpoint. You will get a real notification personally from me". Just incase it is one of those options that get turned on again. Now that I think about it I should have left it on with that message in it.
You know this is not a bad thing for some people, for people that like PayPal, do not have software that does this already for them or a service. It just bites that they turned it on for us. I bet they would have got more people using it if they offered it and not pissed them off than they way they went about it.
It is more free advertisiment for them is all they are trying to get. Basically target spam.

I need help....I just went to PayPal and where do you turn that service off. If I read it right we had to sign up for it. Tell me if I don't enter my information in the blanks they cannot not send out EOA's right? I like personal contact with my bidders. Mine our geared to my auctions and I don't want that to change. I don't use AWs service and I don't want to use PayPals.
I like my own service it might not be quick but it is personal.

ultimato Your lucky. I think it probably got turned on for the rest of us because they had a password on file for us.
Mine is on file cause they are inserting their logo at the bottom of the auctions. Why I do not turn it off beats me. I am one of those sellers that lets my customers pay how they want but my WBN says I do not like to take PayPal.
