The other day my wife and I had a spat and I brought this home for her, hoping it would get me out of the doghouse. For some reason she didn't want to keep it. Which category should I put this thing in?

First, let me say loosecannon, I always assumed you were a female, so now I have to reset the picture of you in my mind LOL. Second..umm..you thought bringing that as a peace offering would help keep the peace? What do you give for anniversary gifts, dead flowers? That is one ugly piece. I'm sure someone out there would love to own it.

Well, actually I brought her a pair of them.

That is just lovely! What a thoughtful gift!! Probably doesn't make any difference what category you put it in as long as you put Mexico or Mexican in the title. I seem to have a loyal following for anything Mexican. Is the lovely bat made out of pottery?

LOLOLOL oh my!! My stomach hurts from laughing so hard. I hope she is very understanding, loosecannon.

Please let me know via email at [email protected] when you put this item up.

My strange husband just loves vampires and I would be honored to present it to him for his birthday

Not both of them though.

Not Mexican but Indonesian. Not pottery but carved wood. Probably some fertility symbol. In my case futility.

How much should I start the bidding at?

loosecannon; First off, may I respectfully suggest that you read some of those romance novels you picked up. The positive to this is the next peace offering can only be a step up.
Isn't there a weird stuff category for your friend?

List your Indonesian Carved Wood Vampire Bats in Collectibles/Weird Stuff, either Really Weird or Totally Bizarre. Depending on what you paid, maybe start at $24.99 for the pair?

That is one UGLY piece LOL... I can't imagine where I'd display it in my house!

I'll have to show that to my husband, he rarely gets "make up" gifts and NEVER has anything that interesting!!!

As for category, make sure you put VAMPIRE in the title & there is a category (not eBay, but in general) that is something like "dead" something (sorry, but stain fumes have gone to my head) that this piece reminds me of...Maybe someone else knows what the heck I'm talkin' about???..

Well, actually I think it's kind of cool. But I'm basically a warped person anyway.

Are there any "native woodcraft" categories on ebay?

why loosecannon, how thoughtful of you! hard to imagine any woman's heart wouldn't be set afluttering at the idea of owning her very own gaudy carved bat - let alone a pair!

isn't there an indonesian 'cultural' section on ebay? i know there is for african and hawaiian stuff.

I think you'd do better selling this...um...thing individually instead of as a set (of course, your description will reference the fact that you have two of them). While one could be an interesting novelty, two would be a bit much for this "bat"-ugly item IMO!!!

Without eBay, I might have a real life...

Check out Antiques/Ethnographic/Pacific Rim.
When I'm hunting for Malaysian and Indonesian I check there. I've seen quite a few carvings, etc., similar to yours. Same style anyway. Lot's of non-antique stuff in there as well.

good gravy loosecannon! Next time try chocolate!

I think seeing as how there is a pair that they are absolutely curtain tie-backs.

Well, wait a minute, nothing to show scale.... if they're big I bet they're fancy doodads to top the two gate-posts of a luxury Hacienda....... ooooohhh, that's a stretch!

Honestly, they are simply identical to a pair I had in the 60's, they are a pair of little hand-carved barrettes.

Don't eat now, you'll spoil your supper! Pick up your room before the Health Dept quarantines us! Who fed the dog my eggplant and turnip casserole? Mom

Hey, please don't speak bad about my bat! I'm the high bidder, guess I'll have to learn that sniping software to assure a win

Thanks, loosecannon.

How about Collectibles:Cultural:Latin American?

He's kind of a cute little guy. And he has a brother, hmmm...

Oh wait, if he's Indonesian he wouldn't fit in the Latin American category, never mind!

I like it. The fact that there are two is a bonus...I bet I could find at least two rooms in my house that need one of those.

I went to a local auction place that trades off between collectable and antique auctions and pre-sales/auctions of this kind of carved Indonesian stuff. One time they had this hideous skull on a stick (the stick looked like a spine). I bid on it - thought it would make a great movie prop for my son's bizarre videos, but the dumb thing went for $40. Ouch. Ya never know.

loosecannon ~ I think you may have the last laugh on this one. Those look like the kinds of things that would do well on eBay. I think you've got a winner. Let us know how things turn out!

Really? Some of you like this object of art?

I didn't take joanne's advice and start it high (sorry joanne). I thought .63 cents was more like it.

Thanks for the bid rowane! Good luck to you.

OMIGAWD!! I LOVE IT!!!

I have NO money!! But I want it! When does it end? Maybe one of my deadbeats will pay up in time....

You all will think I'm nuts, but I really like it.

I really need it.

It's only going for .63 cents but you'll have to fight for it. Rowane wants it too.

Well, I bid my limit and it wasn't good enough. I thought it would make a nice Mother's Day gift for my mother-in-law. Guess I'll have to give her some other hideous thing.

I just bid. I'm so excited. I feel a real connection to this bat. Like it's a picture of my soul.

You see some really funny auctions when you search on hideous.

LMAO at the "hideous" search. Never did that one before.

I can understand why she wouldn't want that as a peace offering. Reminds me of the time my uncle brought an Eskimo mask to his MIL he had never met saying he'd know who she was at the airport by finding the person who looked like the mask! My Grandma was less than thrilled.

I'm anxious to hear how much you get for those hideous(sp?) things!

Also, reminds me of what some friends of mine and I did last year. We planned on having a tacky gift exchange. We had to find the tackiest, grossest, ect. thing at a garage sale and we exhanged them. I found a half used roll of toilet paper and paired it with a 1950s booklet called "When your child wets". My gift? A pair of Adam and Eve figurines. Eve had a club to beat adam with, and looked like she had silone breast implants. Chipped at a very strategic location.

Please let us know how this auction does. If it does well, I'll have to watch for ugly at garage sales. I see ugly stuff a lot but think no one would ever buy it.

My friends and I used to have a "Tacky Gift Exchange" at our yearly Christmas cocktail party. People saved stuff all year to bring. One year, I forgot to bring a gift and went into the trunk of my car and found a piece of rope. I wrapped it in a plastic bag and brought it in. It was a big hit. Other gifts that stand out in my memory include an airplane mobile made out of beer cans and an ugly concrete garden decoration shaped like an old granny with a bun in her hair, who was covered in lichens and smelled like Play Doh. She made an appearance the next year, too, when the 'lucky' recipient re-wrapped her and passed her on to the next victim.
