Today I was checking some feedback people have left for a seller that I am considering buying from. On one of the negative feebacks I found in the area the Item # usually is it said "private". I knew feedback could be private but I have never seen this before. How and why would anyone do that?

Hi, I know quite a few people use private fedback because they may not want other people that know their ebay ID to know what they are purchasing. Also, quite a few people buy adult items that they do not wish their ID to be known. In my case I sell a great deal of brewerian items I have one cusomer that is a collector who is married to a woman whose family's religious beliefs forbid alchohal and related items. He purchases my stuff with a private feedback. His wife does not share the family views, but they feel the private feedback works best for them. I know some sellers are wary of selling to people with private feedback, ths is the only time I believe I have come across it.

The feedback on a sale is marked Private if the sale itself was Private. I sell vintage lingerie and about 50% of my buyers are men buying for themselves. Since they prefer that their families or bosses don't find out that they enjoy women's clothing, I make my lingerie auctions "Private". and that means when I go to leave the winning bidder positive feedback the feedback reads (private) also.
It doesn't mean anything bad, unless you consider it bad for people to purchase adult items.
People sometimes make ALL their feedback private (a different process.) Sometimes they do this for the same reason---so people can't snoop among what they have been buying. I have a bidder with A++ feedback (over 400 pos, no negs) who makes all his feedback private, because he doesn't want his adult children to know he's bought over 300 pairs of ladies' panties.

OT a little, Brighid868, can you still sell used lingerie?
I have been so focussed on a few catagories that I never pursued it after the rules changed.
Hmmm...
Time to sort through the ebay rules.

Cap: Used modern stuff is a no-no--it has to be new with tags to be sold as panties or lingerie anymore. Personally, I'm fine with that. But they better not take away my vintage lingerie category! (It's in Collectibles:Vintage:Clothing:Lingerie/Stockings)
I only sell vintage-new (old stock) but I see people selling gently used vintage panties, slips and bras all the time....possibly it's illegal, but I hardly think a pair of panties that hasn't been worn in 20 years is likely to be a health risk.
To whoever asked---NO, you can make any auction Private, it does not have to be in the adult category.
