Hi!
I am in Canada and have sold 100's of books, most went to the US and I have never been asked for Delivery Confirmation until now. The book only sold for $2.00 and she is basically insisting on Delivery Confirmation.

Does Canada Post even offer this on regular small parcel surface and how much is it? It's too late to call and I can't tell from the web site. I have previously paid out of pocket to register if a book sold for over $100.00 just for my own piece of mind. This cost me $9.00 Canadian and I doubt this lady will go for that, but I don't know if they offer anything else.

Any fellow Canadian Sellers out there tonight who can help?

Thanks
RitaChiquita

I as well sell from canada to the US

the cheapest to get tracking is between 7.50 to 9.00

Tell her the price 7.50 to 9.00 and give the canada post web site...that will throw her for a loop ..the canada post web site is so confusing

She will more then likly say thank you but i do not need tracing. Tell her that because of the international boarders..that that is the reason for the high rate to track

For surface packages to the US you can get insurance for loss or damage for $1.00 but I think delivery confirmation is within Canada only.

I think you can buy an Advice of Receipt card on Registered mail and it costs about $1.05. But, as you have said it does cost $9.00 to register the package.

If you have sold 100's of books maybe just try to reassure your buyer that you have done lots of shipping to the US with no problems. That usually works for us.

Hi,

we do a lot of shipping to the USA. I have just set up with expiditor software from Canada Post and it is working wonders. You must set up an account but that was quick and painless (believe it or not). It give you all the options on every shipment and really puts you in control of cost.

Take care,

The $1.00 "insurance" on surface packages is only available on Parcel Post (not Small Packet).

As noted earlier, there is no delivery confirmation. However, in 600 packages, I have only had 2 go "missing" and both were to business addresses (where they could easily have gotten lost in the mail room).

In any event, I refunded their monies as I believe it is a seller's responsibility to ensure the buyer gets their package (even when it's out of my hands).

I had the FREE canada post software..

1) you have to be set up to the internet to use it
2) it does not work well for the shipping to the us
3) i found it faster to just print out the address to the states on the mainfest

1 sell about 50 items a week to the US ..trust me if i found somthing faster i would be using it ..canada post says it is easy..give it a try for a week then get back to me..basically my feeling it sucks

Sounds like some of you Canucks need to brush up on your Canada Post regs?

Yes, Small Packet items can indeed be sent with Delivery Confirmation. It's called Xpresspost USA. It's not cheap, but I use it for many of my high end items that are under 1KG in weight.

Depending on how close the State is that you're shipping to, it can be less expensive than sending a Small Packet item via Registered mail. I've also found that even when I pay for AR with Registered Mail [signed & returned card] that many times the card never comes back to me.

With Xpresspost USA you can track the shipment online, and Canada Post also guarentees the shiping time & will reimburse the shipping cost if it's even 1 day late.

P.S. This obviously isn't available for Surface Post items. Xpresspost USA is basically what the yanks call Priority Mail.
As soon as the item crosses into the US it gets a Priority Mail sticker/stamp.

Hope this helps

Xpresspost USA comes with $100 insurance, and it costs $1 more for each additional 100 Cdn of insurance you add on.

Small Packet items cannot be insured, unless you send them via Xpresspost USA, or Registered Mail.

If you ship via Parcel Post Air [over 1KG items] the same rule applies. The first $100 of insurance is paid for by Canada Post.

Red-deer ... Expresspost USA adds considerably to the cost -- I realize that any size package can be mailed a variety of ways -- i.e., I could opt to pay Parcel Post rates for a "Small Packet" size book.

What I was trying to say was that if one only paid the cost of postage within that category (i.e., Small Packet), that neither insurance nor delivery confirmation was available.

I have used ExpressPost when the difference between it and Parcel Post was $1. (I can't see a buyer wanting to pay ExpressPost rates for a 200 gram book though.)

"Sounds like some of you Canucks need to brush up on your Canada Post regs?"

That remark resembles me, reddeer.

Yes, I know the $1.00 insurance is not for "small packet" which this book will be. That is the second time in the last couple of months that I have failed to mention that. And I also know about the Xpresspost USA but it is expensive.

The book only cost $2.00 but who knows what it is worth to the buyer? So I guess it is best to give her all the options.

Hey now, I was just yanking yer chains a bit.

Engels ..... I always ship my Small Packet items via Air, and for some of the States that are close to AB, Xpresspost USA was only a few $ Cdn more. IMO well worth the cost for a $250-500 item, which is what I was shipping. I paid the extra out of my own pocket just for the piece of mind.

Shaani ....... You made an excellent point. That $2 book may very well be priceless to the high bidder? I'd let them decide how they want it shipped, as long as they are willing to pay for it.

Well, hopefully I will remember that the "Canada Post small packet" info in my head makes it all the way to the keyboard next time.

P.S. After the way last week started I deliberately started this week with longer chains.

With Xpresspost USA you can track the package until it hits the US and that is when the tracking ends, at least as you can access it from the website or their 1-800 line.

Not exactly. It doesn't show any scans between the border & the final destination, but it does show the final scan when it's delivered.
Not quite as good as UPS perhaps, but it beats the hell out of their International service IMO.

Thanks everyone for all your input!
Yes, I have sent alot of items Express Post, and it is great, but as you've all pointed out quite costly for a $2.00 item.
I will just give her the options and let her decide.

You have all just confirmed what I suspected all along. There is no cheap and easy way to confirm delivery with Canada Post. Surprise!

It never ceases to amaze me that in some cases I can send the same size and weight of package to anywhere in the US for less than I can send it to say... Alberta for instance! And that some of the items I send in bubble envelopes can actually be sent cheaper by Air than by surface to the US.

Anyhoo, thanks all!

This belongs in the Round table at best....it is not just an Ebay issue. Geez....the service 'round here is declining almost as fast as the profits.

Drtooth

Really? How so? I've seen/read hundreds of threads about shipping in the EO. Is it just the Canadian ones that belong in the RT?

I'm assuming by the initial post this seller sold these books on eBay.

Thanks Reddeer!!

Yes I did sell these books and all my books on ebay. I didn't think I'd be breaking some rule by posting here.
I often check out these boards and learn alot. I don't post very often, but appreciate everyones help when I do.
In response to Dr. Tooth, if my post bothers you that much dont fret, as I have got all the answers I need the Moderators may feel free to lock it any time.
