Two part question:
First part - I have an old photo that is in one half of an old wooden folding, display frame/case. All of these cases I see on Ebay are labeled as 1/6, 1/8, 1/9, etc. - what does this mean and how can you tell which size you have?
Second part - I popped the photo out of the case and inspected it. It is actually two pieces of glass - the back piece is solid black and the top piece is kind of like a negative on clear glass. When they're held together, they appear to be one photograph. These two pieces are wrapped within a copper or brass foil that creates kind of a frame for the picture. All of this together fits perfectly into the case. make sense? What is this type of photograph called? I've seen the term ambro and dag, but I don't know what they mean. Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks.

Dag is daguerrotype. Daguerrotypes were produced on a silver or silver-colored copper plate.

Ambro is ambrotype- an ambrotype is a positive picture made of a photographic negative on glass backed by a dark surface.

Both are photographic methods from the 1800s.
Daguerrotype is an older method than ambrotype.

Sounds like you have an ambrotype. Do a web search for ambrotype and I'll bet you find examples for comparison.

(A daguerrotype looks like a block with silver on one face. You can see the picture in the silver. I have one of my great-great grandfather.)
