I had a buyer send me a Billpoint payment but, instead of adding the $5.75 for postage and insurance, she only added 75 cents. So, if I refund the transaction and send her a bill that has correct amounts on it, will I be charged transaction fees for the first one that I refunded as well as the second one that I initiated?

yeah, I just wanted to avoid being charged more transaction fees than I should have and that would initiate another transaction.

Thanks, eventer, for your help. I was having trouble finding that stuff. Well, can I just say, THAT SUCKS!
I'm just trying to not be pissed at the customer cuz I'm pretty sure she did it inadvertently and, after all, it's just 35 cents. This wasn't an auction that I really made anything on like I usually do so that made it seem like more than it usually would have on a paying error.

No wonder buyers like the online payment services. It doesn't matter what kind of stupid stunt they pull- they don't have to pay for it.
You might try emailing the buyer first- there's always hope (however little) that they will accept responsibility for their mistake, and include enough extra in their next payment to cover your additional fees.

Brilliant idea, MrPotatoheadd! Actually I just kinda slipped in that information in my last email to her sorta like a hint.....Didn't just outright ask for it, but if I wasn't such a weinie I would have! haha...

sharkbaby,
Don't feel badly..just went 2 rounds w/a customer who sent me nothing BUT the shipping.
Then couldn't figure out why I was asking for more money. And what's even more bizarre...didn't win just 1 of my auctions, but 9 of them. Now you'd think you would remember winning NINE auctions, wouldn't you?
Now they I've reminded them, they'll send a second payment & I'll get to pay additional fees...but it's just part of doing business!
Atleast I don't have to wait for them to run home & get another check or call the husband to come to the store to bring more money or...the stupid things B&M customers do just as frequently.

Any halfway intelligent person should be able to figure out the situation without having it spelled out for them. Whether or not they act on it is another story...
I didn't mean to be overly hard on buyers in my previous post- it's just that the way the online payment services are set up (seller paying the cost) there's no incentive for the buyer to take care to make a proper payment.
edited to add after reading eventer's post above ^^^
What do you think the chances are of a buyer making that same mistake if it meant that they would have to pay a second transaction fee?

Hey, I understand totally! And the point was well taken. I am sure there are some folks that intentionally underpay thinking that the seller will just let it go!
The good news is that she just PayPal'd me $5.50. So, whoopee! I made 20 cents. Anyway, it was honorable of her to do that and I appreciated it.
eventer! Geez, shipping only? Man, what a hassle. I am often amazed! How could someone accidentally leave off the entire amount that they bid?
NINE auctions and they forgot to pay for the merchandise??? HOLY CRAP! Bet they never leave the house or they'd never find their way home!

Well, partly my fault. She asked me to combine shipping & I sent her a separate email with 2 price options for the combined shipping. She picked up the shipping amount but "forgot" the rest.
No good deed goes unpunished.
mrpotatoheadd,
I'm convinced 90% of my customers who aren't sellers themselves don't have the FIRST clue that there are even fees involved to me.
But in fairness to them, I don't think about fees when I use my credit card in retail stores.
A dear friend runs the local tack shop. I spend a LOT in that tack shop. . For some reason, her swipe machine hates my particular card. She has to hand punch the thing every time (even when I have a brand new one). I only recently found out that her merchant account charges her extra for handpunching the number rather than swiping it. She's been paying those extra fees all these times w/o ever mentioning it.
Now I try to hand her one of my cards the machine likes..still, to her, it was just one of the costs of doing business. Not everything is going 100% your way.

Here's an interesting FYI (Ok, maybe I'm the only person on the planet that didn't know this, but...) I received a reply from Billpoint and there is a box that you can uncheck in your preferences that doesn't allow a buyer to pay without you first sending an invoice. That would preclude these types of problems. Not sure yet whether I should do that or not...
