Where do you go to find out the category # to save time in listing? I use ML and have a choice of drop down categories or the #. I know some of them for repeat listings, but would like to get a list for some different categories that I also list in. Thanks!!

I got irritated when the combined list was taken down, so I made my own. It's called CatList.doc and is located at
http://members.surfbest.net/janice142/CatList.doc
If someone can tell me how to make it clickable, I'll edit and fix it properly... my old a href didn't work.
You can use it to search for categories and the numbers are right there by the title. Oh, and you should know it's big -- 358K.
I didn't know another way to do it, so when you click on that URL a box will come up asking if you want to download or open it right there. Anyway, I hope you find it as useful as I do.

edited to *try* and fix the link... didn't work.

Just put [ url ] and [ /url ] in front of and afterwards. Omit the spaces. Like this:
[ url ] http://members.surfbest.net/janice142/CatList.doc [ /url ]

Glenda, or anybody else that may know....is that the latest category # list? I have printed out at least 4 different lists (30+ pages each list) in the last 1½ years, only to find the category #'s changed around, added to, deleted, etc.
I have to do it that way -print them out for reference - as I am WebTv.
I just didn't want to start another run of 30+ pages if that is not ebay's latest. I just printed one out last month, only to find some parts of it now obsolete....spent more than an hour the other night trying to find where they moved a category to.
Here is another category list that someone gave me that might work with WebTV. I like it because it is updated ever time eBay updates the category list and I don't have to search or print out the list.

Thanks so much for making it clickable for me! I'm learning (taking notes) so I can do it properly next time.
As for the list, it's up to date as of two days ago. Now that I understand how to get the info and combine it, I intend to ALWAYS have it up to date. Since I list across categories (I currently have 21 items listed in 18 separate categories) it's to my benefit to keep it up-to-date.
eBay had *no idea* (or didn't care) how useful their original page was. I wish they had left a link to their original page. In the meantime, this will suffice.

thanks so much itsmylife and janice142, but that link doesn't work for WebTv. All that comes up (you should see it from here..arghh) is 5 gray boxes, no numbers and won't scroll. That's the same thing that happened when I used to post from AW...something to do with the fact that we (Webtv) cannot access anything that uses java applets, java script, or whatever it's called. We don't have that capability that a pc does.
Guess I'll just have to keep doing it the old, cumbersome way. Thanks so much for trying to help. I obviously cannot use anything but ebay's printed category lists with the numbers after them...which they keep changing all the time

The webtv comment got me thinking... searchable is the whole purpose (for me anyway) for the Category List. IF the CatList.doc was emailed to you, could you then from your mail program use Find? I don't understand webtv, but for me being able to "Control F" and search for a topic helps enormously. A 30 page document would not be so helpful in finding where to place my item.

thanks, janice142. You are so kind to spend all this time to try to help.
We have a "Find" key but not in our mail and it works quite differently than a pc's does. It does other things.
We have no Control F & search feature...rather we have "Favs" (Favorite) folders. When something is viewable I can hit "save", put it in my auction folder in "Favs" and pull the list right up. If the mail program were mailed to me, I would not be able to open it for the same reason I cannot view it now....java stuff that we don't have.
I understand WebTv and puters and stick with the WebTv cause it does have some things a pc does not, can do some things a pc cannot, and vice versa. Most of all it is totally and completely virus free and, when you are as old as I am, the huge TV screen compared to (for me with my eyesight) a little grainy screen is terrific. Also, some of us seniors get hand tremors when having to keep our hand on a mouse and click. On a WebTv you can push buttons and pretty much free up your hands.
But back to ebay's list (didn't mean to ramble on there with info useless to you), I do have a printed one. I also have one in my Favs that is viewable but they keep changing the darn things!
It's no big deal, I guess. I have a little hammer that I put on my down arrow key as it is scrolling down the categories when I have to do it that way by category name and I go do dishes and etc while it scrolls cause it can take 10 mins or more to scroll through to where I want to go, to click that category and put it in my auction listing....bet you are ROTFL at that...but it works...a little slow, but so am I
It's only 148K and I divided it by categories but it's all on one page. It's not pretty but I'm hopeful you'll be able to work around the stuff.
NEITHER have java (which was a *major* pain in the patootie to remove)... that took me three tries (over two weeks!) to finally out-maneuver. I'm not an expert, but this may just be helpful for you.

janice 142...I am rotfl...wish you could see that list from here. Yes, I can access it, but it would take me much longer to find something on it than my "little hammer on the down arrow" does. If I were to cc&p some of it and show you, you wouldn't believe it. It is in "computereze". It would take me forever to find something on it. The straight listings with the #'s beside them (even if 30+ pages long) are much easier to read. This one is mind boggling (or I should say "eye boggling" from here.
It's ok. If I were going to continue to list a lot as I did at the end of 1999, a laptop would be the answer. But I don't list that much anymore and so the expense of a laptop doesn't justify getting one just to do auctions, which is all I would use it for.
Thanks so much. You remind me of myself. I don't give up easily but I know WebTv's limitations. The lists with #'s beside each category (listed separately and not running together as the click on showed me) is my limitation. If they didn't keep changing it, it would be fine.

aramatha... could you email me please? [email protected] -- I have another one for you to check. (since i've volunteered you to be my guinea pig) (laughs)
Hello again... the category numbers list was updated this afternoon. I made a Category.doc which is a WordPad document with all the category numbers listed. It's big (364K) and when you click on the link you'll be asked if you want to "Save As" or "Open" -- either works.
This does not work with Webtv though, so if Webtv folks would like I have copied the information into a letter and can forward it to you. Just drop me a letter from the account you wish it emailed to and I'll get it right back out to you. Weekends excluded. I do have *some* life you know. laughing.

Boy, you 'guys' have provided some great info. I've been jotting numbers down from when I search for similar items to check the current market on them (the category number shows up in the URL). These lists will be much more convenient. Thanks!!
