I posted a WANT on the want board today. One of the responses I received was a very rude and offensive one. It came through ebay's email forwarding system, but it came as appearantly "annonymous". Not from any registered ebay user. It came from [email protected]. But this isn't a registered email or id with ebay.

I didn't know this could be done? What's up with that?

luv

PS ~ I did report it to safeharbor anyway though.

It is a valid domain, an anonymous remailing service, so forward the nasty thing to the owner of the domain. They can block users who abuse their service.

And let eBay know that no-id.com is an email anonymizer so they can block them from being used further to register accounts.

Here's whois info on it.

Hi abacaxi,

I had to delete your post as it contained private information about an individual.

I realize that whois is a service that anyone can use, however, we can't have that information posted here - perhaps you could email the information you found to the originator of this thread as an alternative.

Best,

Sara

Sara: If I might inquire, is that a brand new policy?

WHOIS info has ALWAYS been permitted here, as it is public information that is easily obtained, and discussion of such about a business entity is also allowed. I can provide links to several dozen threads if you like, to back up my statement.

I am not questioning your moderation, I am simply asking if this is a newly instated policy.

Thank you.

Sarah ...
WHOIS information is available to anyone who wants to look it up, and anyone who registers a domain name is advised that the information will be available for public lookup. According to the terms of the registrar I found that information in, the only thing I couldn't do with it is spam the owner ... it's a "personal" as posting the mailing address for eBay.

Here's the RULES from AW ... please tell me what part prohibits posting the REGISTERED PUBLIC CONTACT INFORMATION for a domain, as retrieved by the 100% legal use of a whois program and the domain registrar's publically accessible database. It takes no hacking or sleuthing.

"3.2. Content. Any information provided by you, including postings on the Message Center and images for our hosting service, or bidder notifications or other communications sent using our Post Sale Management Tool ("Your Information", as determined by AuctionWatch in its discretion, will not: "
"a) be fraudulent or involve the sale of counterfeit, stolen or illegal items;"

NOPE ... it was honestly acquired

"b) infringe any third party's copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights or rights of publicity or privacy (See our Copyright Policy for more information);"

NOPE ... it was from a publically accessible database.

"c) violate any law, statute, ordinance or regulation (including those governing export control, consumer protection, unfair competition, antidiscrimination or false advertising); "

NOPE ...

"d) be defamatory, trade libelous, unlawfully threatening, unlawfully harassing, or invasive of a person's privacy;"

NOPE ... it was from a publically accessible database, and domain contacts are aware that the information is going to be available ot the entire world.

"e) be obscene or contain any pornography;"
NOPE, no obscenity

"f) use strong vulgar language, crude or explicit sexual references, demeaning racial or ethnic remarks, and/or hate speech;"

NOPE ... it was a straight cut and paste with advice to let eBay know that the user was uisng an anonymizer service for harassing purposes.

"g) contain any viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs or other computer programming routines that are intended to damage, detrimentally interfere with, surreptitiously intercept or expropriate any system, data or personal information; and"

NOPE ... no viruses

"h) link directly or indirectly to or include descriptions of goods or services that: (i) are prohibited under this Agreement; or (ii) you do not have a right to link to or include. "
NOPE - The only prohibited use of whois information is to use it for spamming. It regularly gets posted to advise others of "who is" the domain contact and "who is" their upstream.

Just an observation, but Sara seems OVERLY eager to moderate things that don't even remotely need moderating! (Seen on other threads too). No personal attack intended, Sara.

Hi again abacaxi and everyone,

OK...first I have undeleted your post.

Second, I apologize - you will see that in my first post here that I said I realized that 'whois' is public information, but I didn't think that information belonged here due to privacy reasons, etc.

Anyhow, please understand that I am doing my best...and I'm sure you will all continue to educate me as I continue to learn the ropes here

Best,
Sara

The fact that we're not allowed to publicly comment on moderation, in any form whatsoever, no matter how egregious or condescending the moderator is, makes us look like simpletons or sheep.

Please excuse the bumb question, but what do I do with the info you have provided? Who do I contact?

I emailed ebay already. They're response?
I am sorry that you have received this unwelcome email. Unfortunately,
eBay has no jurisdiction over members' private email correspondence sent
via their own internet service provider (ISP).

They obviously can't read. How infuriating!

Thanks for your help...

Luvmybears -
Forward the emails to [email protected] (the owner of the email anonymizer service) and let him know his service is being used to harass you.
