Pardon my ignorance but when did Canada become the 51st state? I have a bidder who has been arguing with me for 2 days now over an auction they won. They claim they should receive the same shipping as domestic US because Canada "IS NOT INTERNATIONAL". We are only talking about a $1.50 difference. The reason I am not willing to eat it is because I specifically stated no international bidders on this auction. Of course they also told me (not asked) to put gift on the customs form. Do yall have any ideas on how to respond to this? I love my Canadian bidders because they all pay so promptly but this one has me baffled.

I will ship to Canada, but in my description it says I will not ship to Canada so that the buyer will email me before they bid. I then give them the price to ship and also tell them I will not lie on customs forms. If they don't like that then I tell them not to bid. I have no idea what happens if you lie and they catch you but,I am not going to find out either. If they are not international why do the packages have to go through customs and why is the postage higher to Canada. If they want the item then they will have to abide by the rules.

Send them the link to the USPS website, that should clear up any confusion they have.

Maybe?

Tell him/her to look at a political map, with special attention to the boundary between the U.S. & Canada. Then remind them of the definitions of "nation" and "international."

I REALLY want to give them a quick geography 101 lesson or be a real "smarty pants" but my husband keeps reminding me to be nice. This reminds me of a friend who was a travel agent. She argued with a lady for hours over a BUS ticket to Hawaii. The woman didn't even believe it when greyhound told her there wasn't a bridge from California. I think I'll simply write a polite but firm letter and be done with it. Of course, I'll have a rebuttal in the morning

Thanks yall

Blame it on the U.S. post office. Simply say:

"I am sorry but the U.S. post office considers Canada to be different country and charges a higher postal rate. I am simply passing on that additional charge. As far as the customs label is concerned, I will not lie. Sorry."

Tell them that Canada is separate from the USA and that they are very lucky to be there as Presidents Bush's ego is going to lead to the destruction of the USA by the Chinese!

lowprofile - Touche' .... This is certainly a time that I would like to be Canadian! (No offense intended to anyone except, perhaps, Scary George!) Love Canada and it's people!

Interesting, perhaps Mexico is also not considered to be International by their shipping and mapping standards.

They're probably from Ontario - they want to be the 51st state.

Well, my husband is canadian
But he's not an idiot like that one,
And he says that Canada is international, so tell him that
a Canadian agrees with you
As it goes for the request to mark it as a
Gift, that means he doesnt want to pay customs either, be carefull,if the item gets damaged, and you ask for refund from Po
You will have to stick to that
(which is lying and you will be responsible)

Umm .... wouldn't the fact that they realize that they need a customs form ( on which they want you to lie ) indicate that they realize that this transaction is international? Simply point out this error in their logic and call it what it is: an attempt to get a lower shipping rate and illegally avoid customs charges.

Canada Post does not consider USA as International mail they consider it just the USA which is less than international rates,
maybe USPS is the same?

From the Canada Post Site.

It's really quite simple. The United States was once a British colony, as was Canada.

This person apparently hasn't received the news about the changes that have taken place over the past 200 odd years. Give him a break! He just needs a short history lesson...

Tsunami -
Maybe we annexed a part of Canada and the media have been too busy with who won survivor to tell us.

Ask the buyer to describe the flag that flies over their post office. If their government buildings aren't flying a flag with 50 stars on a blue field, and with 13 red and white stripes ...... it's international!

They USED to say that a Canadian was an American that was smart enough not to pay Taxes to Washington DC.

With the current tax situation in Canada, I havn't heard this in years.

lowprofile: The USPS does differentiate between "international" and Canada Mail. It is priced separately and worked at different locations. HOWEVER, it is still NOT domestic, which is the rate the buyer wants.
It is STILL an INTERNTIONAL rate, but the Canadian rate. there is a "international mail manual" and that's where you find Canada!

Well he found out that Paypal considers Canada international. I have the box marked that says no international payments so he couldn't pay me. I'm actually starting to laugh about it.
