I have Windows 95 with Microsoft Works 4.5 and Internet Explorer 4.0 and an outdated McAfee Virus Scan. I do NOT use Microsoft Outlook Express e-mail.

What antivirus software are recommended? I would like one that is easy to install and easy to use as I am not an experienced computer user.

A lot of this depends on personal opinion. I have used both McAfee and Norton Anti-Virus. I prefer Norton myself because it doesn't seem to hog up your resources. Just kind of sits in the backround and does it's thing. Hope this helps.

AntiVir Personal Edition is FREE and really powerful. They provide upgrades to the virus detection files frequently, and have a decent support BB system.

According to a recent study I read in PC magazine, the very best anti-virus software is by a company by the name of Trend Micro. It's called PC-cillin and it has many advanced features not found in other anti-virus software programs. It scans for all types of potential viruses and also monitors email. The virus pattern files are updated on a frequent basis and are easily downloaded via the internet. You can download a free trial version of the software at www.antivirus.com.

We are big fans of the software, as it has saved us a few time from nasty damaging worm programs that were attempted to be sent to us via email.

Good luck.

All the information in this thread is important and good information to keep on hand. I use Norton, Trend Micro, and the latest news information on ZD Net and wherever else you can keep updated. Don't open any unknown attachments and stay alert when opening email. Lot's of good help here just for the asking. Housecall is good to if you have Netscape.

We use McAfee ActiveShield. It costs $30.00 a year, but EVERY day at 4:00pm (or what ever time you set it up for) it logs itself onto McAfee's website, and if a new upgrade is available, it upgrades it self. Haven't had an infection since we started using it.

I use InoculateIT Personal Edition and I'm extremely pleased with it. Whenever a major new virus is released, they usually have an update available before (sometimes DAYS before) Norton and MacAfee. My brother used to use Norton religously until a new virus wiped him out even though he had just downloaded the latest update 2 days before. My InoculateIT had already been updated and the virus didn't affect me. He switched and has never looked back.

The best part? InoculateIT is FREE for personal use.

Norton's 2001

No need to download the latest anti-virus updates, it does it automatically for you whenever updates are available. You can also set your incoming email server up via Norton's Pop3 server so that all email are scanned before they reach you.
