I'm hoping some clothing resellers can help me. I bought some nice women's clothing at a yard sale (new, with tags). When I got them home, I realized they stank to high heaven with perfume. I washed them in my usual unscented detergent, plus some Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. No abatement in the stench! Every time I walk by that pile of clothing in my basement, I want to retch. Is there any method or product I can use to remove the smell, or do I just keep washing them until it's gone. It's seems like it will take a dozen washings or more! I don't want to use Febreze. I tried that on something else, and the smell of the Febreze was so horrible, even weeks after it had dried, that I chucked the item. Thanks for any advice.

You might try a product called Odor-ban.

Sam's Club carries it. It has a citrus aroma when you use it; but it does not linger after it is dry.

This stuff works great on just about anything.
It can't be MY fault, I've never owned any!

Try Dryel Home Dry Cleaning Kit That always works great for me.

On NWT items, the home dry cleaning sheets work best. You throw the item tags and all in the bag. This also perks up wrinkled new items that have been in storage.

The Odor-Ban mentioned works great--I regularly add this to my 2 teenage boys laundry.

Another method is to hang item inside a large sealed plastic bag and very carefully sprinkle fresh kitty litter on bottom of bag, avoiding clothing. A friend gave me a nice NWT dress that smelled of cigarette smoke, and this was the only thing that worked.

Good luck.

I don't like the smell of Fabreeze either. Yuckie! Clorox makes a fabric refreshener that smells alright though. Check your laundry isle and give each brand the sniff test. Maybe you'll find a tolerable scent.

Did you try the baking soda in the freezer trick? Place the item in a plastic bag with baking soda, seal it up real tight, and toss it in the freezer for a day or so. Then try washing it again. It's a pain but it might work for you.

You could also try soaking them in vinegar and water.

If all else fails, try using about 1 tablespoon of Dawn dishwashing soap in the washing machine. I use it all the time to get the greasy smell out of Hubby's work clothes and it works like a charm.
