This is from the Announcement Board today:
***JavaScript Incompatibility***
Starting today, the use of certain JavaScript will be disabled on eBay. The following JavaScript functions will be affected:
**You may not use a JavaScript to drop or read a cookie on any eBay page.
**You may not use a JavaScript that redirects the user from eBay to another page (such as the "replace" script).
**You may not use a JavaScript Include.
These scripts will be disabled on all eBay pages where text can be entered, including the Sell Your Item form, the About Me pages and certain other areas of the site. In addition, all JavaScript will be disabled on the general chat boards.
Only those scripts that are incompatible with the eBay system or policies are being disabled. Other JavaScript will still be able to be used, outside those areas where JavaScript has been disabled completely.
The changes to JavaScript may impair certain third-party auction management tools. Please contact your auction management software provider if you have any questions or concerns about whether these changes will impact your software.
Regards,
eBay

Explain to me too please. I understand "cookie" but java script include or java script replace have me scratching my head

The part that got me was the "impair certain third-party auction management tools." Yikes. Sounds ominous.
Of course, I don't understand anything but "cookie" either...

And it's been long overdue! There are JavaScript tricks that can suck your email address out of your browser (for a spammer to use), plant things
**You may not use a JavaScript to drop or read a cookie on any eBay page.
Security for viewers of the page, or maybe to protect eBay's own servers from planted hostile scripts.
**You may not use a JavaScript that redirects the user from eBay to another page (such as the "replace" script).
Keeps you from getting shunted off to a seller's private site when you thought you were clicking on an auction listing.
**You may not use a JavaScript Include.
Makes sure your listing source code is 100% visible on the page for search and inspection. An "include" could let someone totally replace the description after indexing has happened, so people don't see what the index tells them is there.

Thanks, abacaxi. So how would this effect auction management software?

At least one of those three things can be done with HTML, you don't need java.

Well, that lifts the fog slightly Thanks!
Why would one want to hide the listing source code?

So I guess the "right click steal a pic" is gone??
I also saw ebay adds that made those banners announcements at the bottom of your browser If you don't know what I am talking about it is hard to explain. At the bottom left corner of the browser where the little hour glass of a loading page sits.......Many websites have their 1-800 number in it. And some have started placing that code in their adds, making it difficult to scroll down on the page.
Those are done in java script and change how you view a page. "right click steal a pic" prevents users from also viewing the source code so the Ebay sherrifs (groan) can see the source of your evil writings lol.

elfowl -- where did you find your JavaScript info? I use IE 5.x, and I'm not finding (under "Tools:InternetOptions:Security" anything that separate out JavaScript for Mail vs. News vs. Browser. Just curious, 'cause I reallllly don't want my email being "sucked up" by anyone!
BTW, perhaps someone knows a setting that will prevent said sucking.

>>There are JavaScript tricks that can suck your email address out of your browser<<
And then there's the one that plants subliminal messages in the minds of the user that causes them to visit your web site and spend lots of money....

**You may not use a JavaScript to drop or read a cookie on any eBay page.
This kind of "cookie" is not detected by most cookie-blocking software, and can be used to track a user across many websites.
elfowl -
NEVER enable JavaScript for mail! that's how viruses are spread (you open mail, script EXECUTES).
Java is somewhat safer.
lovepotions -
Right click to save PIC will still work - that is a browser function, not JavaScriupt on a page. the supposed preventive script only works IF the user has JavaScript enabled in their browser.

Hi Islander,
Here is what you are looking for
Can you disable javascript in Outlook Express?
Yes:
Close both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
Start Internet Explorer.
Select the Tools menu, then Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Internet icon, then the Default Level button (if enabled).
Click the Restricted Sites icon, then the Custom Level button.
Scroll down the list to Active Scripting, and change it to Disable.
Click OK until all settings are saved.
Close Internet Explorer.
At this stage we have told Internet Explorer to allow scripts to run
from web sites, such as Hotmail. Now we have to tell Outlook Express
NOT to allow scripts to run:
Start Outlook Express.
Select the Tools menu, then Options.
Click the Security tab.
Change the Security Zone from Internet to Restricted.
Click OK until all settings are saved.
Close Outlook Express.
If you have any other question feel free to ask.

Hi snazz,
I have deleted your last post as posting a link to live auctions is a violation of our CG's.
I will email you a copy of your post for ease of editing.
Thanks,
Sara

Hello Islander. I have included step by step instructions for securing Outlook Express in this thread: http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=376210 You will need to manually change some of the default settings for the Restricted Zone since it isn't as restricted as it should be.

deedeals & Blanche Thanks!! I've been gone all day, but will sit down and do as you have outlined.
Here's why I hollered for help on this one: Last week, I set up a new mailbox at my ISP. I wrote 1 one! email to a very posh-posh auction house down in Southern California, so they are the only outfit to have received an email from this address. Starting less than a day afterward, I started receiving buckets of junk mail -- real grungy, ugly stuff included. Since I had also sent them an email with my regular address on it, and have received no junk in that box, I'm thinking that they probably didn't spill the address to anyone.
Just to test the ISP for a privacy leak, I set up yet another mailbox, but I didn't use it for anything, nor did I set it up as an Account in Outlook Express. So far, that mailbox is still empty.
I am so ticked off about that mailbox being full of cr*p! And I thank you for posting that info!!!

PayPal uses JavaScript on a new banner - cannot be loaded! From what I have seen the last couple weeks looks like ebay is trying to corner the pay option market with all these new STUPID changes.
