a dear friend has asked me to find a selling venue for some wonderful oil paintings. these were done about 50 years ago by a very talented albeit unknown artist.
the artist had several gallery showings in the midwest area and a couple in Calif. in the 50's
they are truly good.
where is the best place to sell these? he is hoping to get 200-1000 for each of them and my untrained eye says they are definitely worth it.
any advice on marketing these will be much appreciated

My experience with fine art, is that ebay is not the place to sell. You could try, but put on a reserve. It also depends on what the subject matter is... it may find interest if the theme is dogs, or shoes, or views of a town... However, I would suggest sending photos of them to auctions houses in California, where the artist might be known, or collected, or perhaps the subject matter is relevant. Hope this helps

Of course, I can't say for sure without looking at your paintings, but most oil paintings sell for much more than 200.
Watercolors generally start around 400 and are not considered as valuable as oils.
A very good auction house would be your best
bet in my opinion.

You need to do a web search for the artists name, also post it here so we can go to our books and try to help you. Search ebay also. Ed

I checked for Mildred Priest at askart.com and found nothing.
The portrait of Darla Hood might sell best on eBay in the TV memorabilia. The rest would sell best in the locale they were painted in. If you can get a gallery to show them or an auction house in that area to give them a bit of a push, you could be surprised.
There are plenty of paintings by talented and not well known artists ...
