I contacted a distributor about purchasing through them. They sent me an e-mail with the form to fill out. It ask's for a federal Tax ID # and I do not have one. I knew I need a Sales Tax ID but do I need a Federal one too? Where do I get it and how much is it?

If you are a sole proprietor with no employees you do not need a Federal Tax ID number as your taxes are submitted under your social security number. If this is your situation contact the distributor and inform them of your federal tax status and ask if they want your state resale number or your social security number. (For safety sake I'd push them toward the state number)

You can get a federal tax ID number from your local IRS office. You need form SS4. In most areas, you can get one right over the telephone. Even if you are a sole proprietor (and are not REQUIRED to have one), sometimes it is good to have because you don't want your social security number all over the place.
