I just bought a sandisk for my computer, I downloaded everything but cannot get it to work. I think I am missing a usb driver and I don't know where to go to download one. Anyone out there have a clue to what I might be talking about?

If you are running windows 98 or higher, check your install disk. There should be a generic one there. USB ports are pretty much standard these days.

Hi cabeldogii, I am running windows 98 and just did a quick restore last week because I got a new hard drive. I am not sure what you mean by an install disk? Sorry I am new to all of this good computer stuff...but I am slowly learning!

GO in to your bios your USB ports are probablly turned off.

when you reboot your computer watch for the messages that come up just before windows boots you will see a message that say like pess f1 to enter setup all computer arent the same so your computer my use another key to enter the bio.

Please if you really dont know what your doing get some one who does to help you any changes you make could mess up your computer in little and big ways.

First thing to do would be to go to "control panel" and then "system". Go to "device manager". USB ports will be on the bottom. If there is a yellow flag, there is something wrong. If no USB ports show at all, then USB is disabled in the system bios. This is unlikely unless you bought a clone computer from a custom builder who did not turn them on. Almost all major Mfg would have them turned on. If you have a yellow flag highlight the 2 items under "USB" ports on the device manager list and remove them. Put your Windows 98 Cd in the drive and restart. Windows will detect the ports and load the software for them.

With USB you install the drivers for the device you buy and them install the device. If you installed the Sandisk drivers with the sandisk installed there may also be a problem. Remove the sandisk software under "add & remove programs" and re-install the right way: Install w/o the unit plugged in, reboot and then plug in the reader.

If your computer has a VIA or SIS chipset the USB drivers that come on the 98 disk may not work. If you have these chipsets your computer will have come with a CD with motherboard drivers for USB on it and you will have to use those.

Hi Tony, I am going to try now, but I don't think I have a windows 98 program, the only thing I have is the quick restore disks. I do have the sandisk loaded, I will remove that and check out the "yellow" flags you talked about. My computer is only a little over a year old and is a compaq. Thank you for taking the time to help, this is sooooo frustrating!

Tony, I did what you said and found this at the bottom:
Universal Serial Bus controllers
General purpose USB Hub
Intel(r) 82801AA USB Universal USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub

there are no yellow flags on any of these, just a grey icon.

There are yellow question marks above that though where it shows other devices:
Camera
Image Mate Compact Flash USB

Any ideas?

Try this 1st...
Go back & delete the 2 things with the flags... then restart...
Upon restart windowz will detect these devices & at this point you will probly need the CD's that came with them.
Just follow the promts.
It really sounds like you have a comcrap or something like that with the QR CD?

On MOST of the puters that use something like that you will usually have EVERYTHING already loaded in a folder on the C:/ drive.
If it asks for your windowz CD... look to see where it is pointing... something like c:/compaq ? If so just click yes(next) & it will load it for you.

If all of the above doesn't work... you will prob have to restart in safe mode & do this again(I mean go & remove the flagged devices).
Actually I kinda like to do it thru safemode cause you probly have LOTZ of stuff that has loaded 2x & such & those really should be removed & you let windowz detect them again & load the right driver.

NOTE: DO NOT HAVE THE DEVICES CONNECTED WHEN YOU RESTART THE 1st TIME... hook them up one at a time and restart after installing ea one!

If you have NO CLUE what I was talkin about then get someone to help you... or call customer support for the devices your tryin to install.

Cheers
