Hiya:
You have all been so helpful to me and others in the past I thought I would post a couple pictures of what I have and see if any AW experts could help me.

A friend gave me this lid to "get rid of it". It looks like Capodimonte but since its only the lid to "something" I'm totally clueless. How does one tell if its real Capodimonte or just CRAPodimonte.

The lid has some chips on a couple of the flowers and also one about 1/2" on the inside rim of the lid. Its about 4 1/2" in diameter. Is this sucker worth auctioning or should I toss it myself? What the heck is it a lid to?

Ok...images are posting below after much blood loss on my part [ edited by SShayler on May 26, 2001 02:07 PM ]

Geeeez..that was painful. Thanks for tryin Toke, I finally figured it out. For some odd reason when I uploaded the file, the .jpg extention became .JPG (in caps) and I guess that royally screwed things up.

SShayler,

For future reference when using AW :

1.Upload image to Auction Manager

2. Once uploaded the code is [$img]http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/us/username/nameofimage.jpg[$/img] (without the $'s)

**replace us with first two letters of actual username for image hosting.

***replace username with actual username

But the images were stored on the web server space of the ISP, in this case prodigy.net, correct?

The moderator advice, Upload image to Auction Manager, is a $$$$$ AuctionWatch service, is that also correct?

They are showing up just fine on my broswer, so I'm kinda puzzled now about the procedure for linking to images in these forums.

It's pretty what ever it is. Is it without chips???? Wouldn't have thought to look at a lid till I saw that.

SShayler,

Here is a closed auction that indicates the Capodimonte seal should be on the bottom. The seller carries lots of Capodimonte stuff, maybe you can find more info or ask him a question through Ebay's wonderfully reliable email forwarding system.

SShayler...

I'd just list it as "believed to be", or "in the style of"...Capodimonte. Since it's a lid, and therefore unmarked, you have no way to ascertain its origin for certain, yada yada.

Do a jazzy title...here's the lid you thought you'd never find, kind of thing. You never know...

Also, if you give the exact measurement, a candlemaker may be able to use it.

"Would make a great lid for a frosted glass candle, measures xx by xx."

I've seen some plain glass lids for candle jars and they're pretty pricey.

Just a thought.

That is a pretty piece. I have to say, I am not an expert by any means on porcelain or pottery but I will give you my opinion.
That reminds me of pottery pieces that I have come across, that are usually handwritten "Italy" and are numbered on the bottom piece.
If you go to this auction...look at the bottom of this pitcher. It reminds me of your lid, around the bottom edge. What do you think?

I hope I am wrong and hope your lid is a Capodimonte!
Best Wishes!!

Thanks for all your help. Since its just a lid, any markings would (I'm guessing) be on the bottom of its mate. I'm going to list it as you suggested "in the style of" or "Capodimonte?"

The piece is a far cry from perfect, but who knows...this could be like a cookie jar lid from a Hull Little Red Riding Hood that got broken...maybe someone is lookin for it.

I'll probably put it up with $1.00 starting bid. Let you know how it turns out
Sue
