My DH found this crock and I have no earthly idea what to call it. Also, should I clean the rust off before I try to list it and can someone possibly give me an approx. starting price. One pic should show the id mark on the handle, one shows the letters and number on the bottom, and one shows some numbers that are on the metal band.
I hope that I can get the pictures to show up properly.

One other piece of information. There is no paddle or place for one, so it couldn't be a churn of anytype. (I thought it was a small butter churn) There is a rubber gasket underneath the top.

On your third photo down, it's a bit blurry, but is that a "M" with words around or near it?
If it is, what does it say? I'm leaning toward the old Monmouth Stoneware Co., that used to be in Illinois, or perhaps the Macomb Stoneware Co.
Other two top stoneware companies were Western Stonewear (that bought out, or merged with Monmouth), and UHL, from Indiana, which was a fierce competitor of Red Wing.
All of these stoneware companies have collector web sites on the Internet.

brie49, I can only see the M and then below there is FF and a circle. The writing directly below the M is illegible.(or it is to the tired old eyes)LOL! I'll check the collector's sites and see if I can find it.
It's too large for a humidor. It is approx. 27" in circumference and 8" tall.

I noticed a B, an F and a 1 on the bottom, but that doesn't ring a bell with me. UHL Pottery used an acorn logo and Monmouth/Western Stoneware used a maple leaf logo.
What is the circled area with wording on your pic? Is it just showing damage, or another kind of mark? I can't read it.
Whatever it is, I like it!
edited to add last sentence.

brie49, The mark is on the cast iron handle. The numbers on the side are on cast iron. I haven't been able to find any marks other than the B F 1 on the stoneware. What is circled is a little hole that may have occured when the crock was fired since it doesn't go through.
I would really like to find out what this piece is. Our neighbor made the suggestion of a pickling crock or one for homemade sourkraut. He guessed the age around 80 years but I'm not sure. The hubby won't let me list it until I can find something out about it.

Hello again. It may be a crock for making pickles, but I don't think it is for making sauerkraut. When they made kraut in the old days, when this was made, the crocks were widemouth so a round wooden piece or something else could be inserted on top of the kraut and weighed down with something heavy to "press" the kraut while it aged.
About two-thirds the way down the page you'll see an e-mail address where you can write with your question. Good Luck, and I hope your crock brings you big money on eBay! At least the shipping fees will bring someone "big" money. lol

brie49, Thanks for the help. I've followed your advice used the link to get more info. Still waiting on an answer.
Weighed the crock last night on bath scales- approx. 14lbs.. Add packaging weight to that-that's about 16lbs. total. Glad I'm not going to have to pay shipping!LOL!
Hubby said when we got a definitive answer as to age and what it is called, then I could list it. He still doesn't remember where he got the thing. It's been packed away in a corner of his shop for at least 20 years!
