Good afternoon
I have a question about insurance and postage.
Suppose I sell a very large and heavy item for 50.00. The person who wins it lives quite a distance from me and the item weighs 25 lbs.
If I ship the item - double boxed and properly as I always do - is the post office resposible to re-imburse me for shipping if the item arrives broken? Do I insure the package for the selling price of the item or the complete price of win & shipping. The shipping could be substantial.
If the answer is no, even though I have done everything in my power to pack and ship correctly, do I have to substain the loss and essentially "est it"?
I am asking this question because it has piqued my curiosity as to what happens in these cases.

No the post office only refunds the cost of the item not shipping, insurance, Delivery confirmation. And it can be tricky proving the price of the item. Though lately they have taken a printed version of paypal payment as valid proof of value.

Hi Neil,
You R 2 funny. Just look at my list and I am sure you will figure it out (ended today). And the winner is 3000 miles from me.

thank you for your help. I am just going to do the expert packing I always do and keep my fingers crossed. The winner is the nicest lady and my real concern is getting her item to her intact. I was just curious because this poor woman has had so many broken pieces I was wondering what the post offices responsibilty was when you pack properly, double box and use bubble wrap and peanuts and the still break the item - you would think they would have some responsibilty. After all, they make bazillions of bucks.

well, now that I know they are re-selling insurance paid items on eBay, it doesn't surprise me one bit that they have so many claims.

I believe I read in a thread here some time ago that UPS will reimburse postage (the USPS does NOT). It might be worth a little extra time/money on your part to accommodate a buyer who's been shafted by the exquisite care with which the post office has handled her parcels in the past.
