Whats your sleeper of the Month?
I went to an auction 2 weeks ago, it was pouring down rain, things were very disorganized because the rain forced them to rush for cover with the stuff.
I bid and got this pretty widget for $12.50, really didn't think it was anything special, but did think I could at least get my money back for it on eBay.
I put it on eBay with my usual $1.00 NO RESERVE, it goes off tonight.
Its currently at 380.00 BIG ONES!!
Who would have guessed!
Boy.. "I JUST LOVE THOSE SLEEPERS"

Ok, Packer, you deserve at least one bite to your question instead of this thread degenerating into a totally Canadian funfest!
My sleeper was a book I picked up at an antiques show for $8, it was circa 1890 on a neat exploration travel subject, I figured it was a good one but had no idea, and now I am $300 wiser!

I have one! I have one! I picked up a falling-apart-looks-crappy book about a Yogi at a thrift store for $1. The Yogi had signed it in 1947... It sold a week later for $1,135. And to think, I almost put it back! ........Deb (mostly lurker)

Gosh, my sleeper hardly compares
Went to an OUTSIDE auction about 3 months ago; referred to on my website and throughout my family as "The Great Snow Auction" and got lots of bargains. Paid $22.00 for a hammered aluminum tray, probably the most expensive thing I bought. I knew it was good and listed with a reserve of $35.00. It sold for $255. - The initial BID was 250. so..if you find anything made by Palmer Smith, he's a nice guy to know
Other than that, EVERYTHING is a sleeper; I'm too busy redoing everything to comply with the "links" policy to LIST anything!

how about the sleeper that almost was. Bought a widget for 2.00 don't know much about them (other than worth more than 2.00)listed last night 9.99 opening bid
this morning two emails both had bid looking for part number and pictures one bidder tells me item is worth 500-1000
Great I think post pictures now bad news
Turns out my item is common just happend to be in the case of the high price item
Verry helpful bidder tells me I will probably do ok on case alone and the common widget is probably worth 20 or so
so I canceled auction and will relist case and widget sepratley
oh well it was nice while it lasted

Hi
I had put up a couch which I listed for $50 and said local only.
It wound up going for $255 and the person came from another state about 3 hours away.
He said the photo of the couch looked so "comfy."

I wish mine was better than this.....but I bought 3 boxes of widgets (my first ebay listings) at $10.00 for the lot, and listed the widgets, some separately, some grouped. One widget went for $135.00 (about fainted!) The total widget lot brought me $900.00. Pretty cool for my first Ebay experience!

It isn't this month but I went to a Library Sale on the second day which was fill a bag for $3.00 and I sold one book for $326.00. That was a good days work.
I sometimes comb the antique shops because those dealers don't know everything. Well, I have always wanted to get a good deal on a Harmony Kingdom and I found one for $25.00. I took a chance and bought it and sold it for $375.00.
Don't ya just love those sleepers.........

How about a dog of the week? $2,500 piece of retail software, sat all week at $1, closed at $1.50. Harumph.
Okay, no big deal. This is a piece of software for scientists (molecular modeler) and I fully expected I would have to give it away. Paid $5 for it, so no great loss.
I've had lots of great deals, this was the first time in four years that I got slammed. Yahoo! to you guys.
Packer, I don't have your email addy. Mine's [email protected] if you need to contact me.

Okay Libra63, what in the world is Harmony Kingdom? I guess I've been living under a rock too long.
I checked on eBay to see what "it" "they" were and it didn't help me at all. Please enlighten me!

skylarks,
Tell your hubby calling your items a widget is how you prevent 300 lurkers who are reading this from buying them up and saturating the market for them at ebay.
For instance, if you said "I just found a free cowpie and sold it at ebay for $5000!", the next day, the pastures would be bare and ebay would have a million cowpies listed (L@@K! RARE COWPIE!! HARD TO FIND BROWN COLOR!!!), effectively making them worthless.

rachelsmom,
To me a SLEEPER is when you buy or get something that you have no expectations of(maybe it came in a box of junk).
You go ahead and list it anyway on eBay (or elsewhere) for "filler" just hoping to make enough to cover your expense of listing it. You figure someone out there may want it.
To your total surprise the bidding starts and you end up making a months wages out of it.
For the life of you, you can't figure out what they see in it that you don't.

brie49 Harmony Kingdom are hand carved boxes of very unusual design. At the onstart they also made jewelry but have discontinued doing that and have branched out into flowers and tiles. The flowers are also little boxes and when you lift the cover there is a lady bug inside. All of the boxes have a theme and inside the box are little carvings that go along with the theme. Go to the website and see how they look because they are truly sleepers. They range in price from $17.00 to $800.00. My favorite is "Road Kill". Now after writing this they will be sleepers no more.

packer How lucky you are to find those sleepers. There is nothing like that in our town. Our only sleepers are the ones under the bridge.
Edited because I am just learning how to use bold.
