Does anyone know what type of license is recquired to resell Rv's, boats etc. without paying sales tax and getting a title for the item? We would like to purchase items for resale. Point us in the right direction. We live in Illinois.

Ummm...I don't know if this answers what you are asking, but a brick and mortar dealer transfers titles into their name....

Otherwise there is no proof that you really own the vehicle you are selling

So, there is no way to purchase larger items for resale without paying sales tax and getting a title for the vehicle? I thought dealers were able to bypass this, somehow. Oh well, seemed like a good idea!!

Every vehicle I have ever bought from a dealer, had the dealer's name on the title.

Otherwise it could have been stolen....

You need to be a licenssed dealer
Contact your states department of licensening for details
Then check with your states sales tax authority for info on how to buy for resale
Probaly be a good idea to try to work for somebody for a while to learn the business before you strike out on your own.

My husband bought a truck last may from a dealer in Massachusettes. It was originally a lease vehicle out of Quebec and we had a nightmare of a time getting a title for it here in NY because the title was still in the Canadian dealer's name, and it was in French.

The DMV actually made me find a French teacher to translate it in writing and add a written statement to it stating what her credentials were.

About 10 years ago, I checked into a dealer's liscense in NY, and at that time it was $50. They don't transfer titles into the Dealer's names here... a bill of sale is proof of ownership for them.

Not that I would ever do this but.......

....rather than purchasing large items like R/Vs, boats and cars for resale why not just act as a 'venue' for the owners? Offer to list them on ebay and forward details, including names & numbers, via email. You get a small listing fee, and a commission if it sells. Not that I would ever do that BUT it can work! You have no money invested and you don't have title to the vehicles. In this glorious "Land of Lincoln" if you sell more than a few vehicles in one year those terrible reg flags go up and someone will be in touch with you to 'pay the piper'.
By selling them for others, you're name is never involved. You just collect your $ and go on about your way. Everybody knows somebody with something for sale. Try one or two and see what happens.
It does work, boats and RV's do sell on ebay, trust me.

Not that I would ever do that.

But........

Be careful on S&H You would need some major boxes and packing tape to ship a RV. Not to mention USPS loosing it.

On a serious note, buying without paying taxes for resale is not easy to do legally especially if you are acting as a seller. If irt was possible to do dealers would never have to pay taxes.

Since you have to legally transfer title you will be under a tax obligation.

I appreciate all the replies!! We were just brainstorming and trying to come up with some other options for Ebay. We may possibly check into doing some sort of Commisioned Sales for larger items. I'm wondering how the sale would be completed, though? No money will change hands until the buyer checks the merchandise over and is willing to purchase. It may be hard to collect a commision at that point. Any ideas on how to handle the process?
