I've had a geocities web page for years, and have uploaded all my auction pics onto it for the last 8 months I've sold on ebay. Is this not allowed anymore? I heard rumors ebay (or geocities?) was going to put a stop to it, but my pictures have still worked so I didn't think anything of it.

How exactly does this work?

Hi,

It's against Geocities terms to use them for a picture host for things like eBay auctions. Apparently something like last November or December, they did something with their system or software to prevent that kind of use. I used to use them until my pics would not load to eBay properly, I would put in the URL of one pic but mysteriously a totally random other pic from my database would appear in its place. That's when I switched to AW, around December.

However their policing seems to have increased recently -- it may have something to do with the total number of "hits" your photos are getting -- if you run a small number of normal auctions, you might not get noticed -- but it appears if you are running more auctions with items getting lots of page views, it triggers something in Geocities.

A good friend of mine just last week not only had EVERY photo instantaneously removed from about 20 eBay auctions, but their "website" on Geocities was totally deleted as well. They registered under a new identity & posted the photos to the running auctions again, those ones lasted 2 days, then bang, everything was deleted again -- so not worth it, they have switched to AW actually now.

Tripod did the same thing not too long back....I did not host my pics there but some of my other gifs etc that were on both my webpage and ebay listings.....Tripod will not let any pics etc load to auction sites and I am relatively sure that Geocities is the same way .....its against their terms of service.

There aren't a lot of companies that like being 'used'. When you use their site to just store images to be used on eBay or some other site then you are defeating the purpose of their free sites.

If you were paying for storage space and another seller links to your pictures wouldn't you feel 'used?' I love seeing these sellers that get caught doing that when the site owner switches pictures on them.

uaru,

You're right of course. The good news for me was that I prefer AW's system much better anyway, so I didn't moan the loss. I knew an awful lot of people that were "using" Geo back then, some still are, each to their own I guess.

When you registered with Geocities, their terms of service said "no remote loading," (which means you can't use them for picture storage) and you agreed to that.

They didn't do much to stop people until Yahoo took over. They're slowly but surely closing down people's webpages and deleting their pictures for noncompliance.

All of the Lycos people are doing the same thing. (Tripod, etc)

There are plenty of sites out there for you to store pictures, some are even free. Just do a search on any major search engine and you'll find a slew of them.

I agree, which is why my pics were not hosted there.....but I inadvertantly used that link to "share" gifs from the website and thats when I discovered the problem......You can't do that either.

I just lost all of my 400+ pics on Geocities when they deleted my account. Of course, they HAD to do it right when I had some high price items ending!

Luckily I had most of my pics backed up on my hard drive, so I just uploaded them onto my personal paid website (no more of the free ones for me)

Still cheaper than AW.
