I have a very pretty vase that I tried to sell, but it didn't go. I think it may actually be crystal, which may help it sell when I relist. How can I tell for though? Is there any way?

Clear glass is sometimes called crystal, but the most prized crystal is leaded and 24% leaded is sometimes called full leaded. An experienced eye can see the difference. If you hold it up to the light you should see some definite bluish/purplish highlights. Having said all this remember that I'm just the janitor who stepped into this office to take the trash out.

The important thing is not whether it has a lot of lead content or not, you must be able to ID the pattern, or the manufacturer, or the date. Crystal vases are a dime a dozen on ebay unless it has a name to go with it.

When you lightly tap on glass it makes a dull sound. Crystal has a ring to it. Quite melodious. That's the easiest way to tell.

Lead crystal also tends to be very heavy.

just take your finger and "flick" the edge of the item with your fingernail and if it is crystal you will hear a prolonged lovely sound. If it is glass, you will hear a "thunk"

fully lead crystal cannot be a dime a dozen on ebay or anywhere, most of them are made by reputable name brands,if no name, they are still good pieces.

Not to a glass collector, they are NOT! Go into any dept store and look at the "crystal VAAAses" high prices, but for resale, I think not. And Romanian "crystal" and Hungarian "crystal" stuff is suffocating the Antiques-post 1900 category. Even the "seconds" stores, like Marshall's, has "crystal" real cheap! As a glass collector, I have to recognize the pattern, or the manufacturer, before I will even research it - IMHO only. This is only my opinion, mind you, and does not make any difference to anyone else's!
