I would like to protest the free listing day. It hits those of us in the pocketbook that have paid full price expecting to get a price based upon historical supply and demand. With the free listing day the category gets short term saturated with listings which results in a lower selling price for our item.
Unless eBay can change the economic law that equates price with supply and demand it has hurt my return on items that are currently listed. I never use the free listing as I feel it pennywise and pound foolish for sellers.
Secondly it affects system performance and results in down time or slow loads that also hurts the selling price of items. eBay's system has a hard enough time keeping up with demand.
Had I known in advance of this free listing day I would have waited before listing any other items.
I wish eBay would forget the free listing days and instead offer listing rebates based upon a sellers volume that can be used anytime. It would reduce peakedness in supply and also demand on their system.
Just my opinion as I know there are many that wait with anticipation for these occasional free days.
days.
BTW BS = Basically Saturated for those that might be offended by a more common term used for that abbreviation.

Yep people collect their junk for a free dump on ebay lol. Last time was a waste for me. They crashed, and there was soooo much garbage to go through to actually find good items. Now I must wait a week to list new items!

Hmm.. my only complaint about free listing days is the lack of notice from ebay. I could have gotten alot more listed with a bit more notice. My ebay fees run hundreds of dollars per month, I'll take what they can give me anyday..

Well, I guess today is free listing day??? I did not know that nor was I informed. And, the site is down, so I can't list nor check my auctions that will be closing with apprently no bids, since we can't get in to bid!
What a waste!

Well, if one ever got any notice, I personally wouldn't mind too much, even with the clutter, over the years we have always done well, but half the time I have no idea they are occurring till they are past.
But, we just don't use eBay like we use to, to many problems, too many rules, too much hassle!

If you want to pick up some bargains, make sure you put in some bids the day before the end of auctions---last time there were some major crashes because of the huge amounts ending at the same time.

I can see your point,I would say in alot of areas it kills other sellers sales if people list alot of cheaper items or list a ton of the same items. On some of the items I listed I doubt if I even get a bid because of that, but I wasn't able to sell these items anyway.Thats why I'm listing them on other sites most of the time,at least I can sell there. But I figured for free I'd give it a try.

I suspect that at least one of the reasons that eBay doesn't give more notice is because of the volume of listings it creates. If sellers had days to prepare, think of how many listings you'd be looking at. I just don't see how eBay would be able to support that volume without crashing.
I agree that way too much "junk" gets listed on FLD, too.

The only reason eBay did a free listing day was for end of quarter window dressing of the listing count and gross revenues. Note that they charged then refunded. This permits them to show bigger gross income, while expensing out the refunds as a promotional cost.
Free listing days have always impacted site performance. You think eBay doesn't know this? You think they care?

I couldn't agree with you more.
It really make me mad to.
If I would've know sooner I would have held off listing auctions about 4 or 5 days prior.
I don't have "JUNK" to sell on e-bay, and for "crying out loud" who in there right mind would want to go through the hassle of packing this "JUNK" up just to save a quarter.
Anyway....yes it dilutes the market so bad that for us that PAID to run our auctions our chances of getting a good price is just about nill. Not to mention the pending CRASHES.
Now it seems I won't be listing for about 7 days when all this nonsense is over.

Well my thrift store "junk" finds are being BIN'd at a good clip so I'm happy as a pig in FLD slop. I just wish I had more "junk" pre-loaded into inventory.

Last time I worked my you know what off to list a bunch of books and "junk" and must have saved a whole $5. This time I listed 12 good items that are going to a RL specialty auction, just for the exposure. I've already had 1,000 hits and several inquiries and saved $50 in listing fees. Thank-you ebay!
Yes, I know this will make their bottom line look better but I thought it may also have been to bring us back into the fold after the jacket fiasco? Everybody's up in arms so ebay throws them a bone. There was also a FL day after the "it's only a dollar" reserve price increase when everybody was also mad. Coincidence?

The last free listing day I was on the grumbling train and didn't list too.
Oh the crashes, the slow searches, etc, etc.
Well the ending day came and everything went smooth with ebay.
This time I, with the help of Mr Lister, listed everything I had in inventory.
So most auctions will end the day after the 4th. With the 4th in the middle of the week I hope there will be a lot of people that just get that day off and cruise the listings.
My reasoning is this:
It is the slow season on ebay. Why not list for free and pay nothing if it doesn't sell. Better than listing for a fee!
If I was a seller that did have a few items up that I felt were going to be hampered by all the listings then I would end the auctions and relist at a different time.
Yes, I think ebay did this for their bottom line benefit. I don't think they care a hoot about us.
But if you are a seller that has an inventory and sells the same items I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy a free day.

In the video industry the 4th of July can be good - or bad for business. It really depends on the weather!
Nice summer day with a cool breeze - everyone is outside at a picnic somewhere. No business for video
Rainy day - video hits a jackpot! Everyone is home, all the relatives are there, and there is nothing to do!
Horribly hot and humbid day - see rainy day!
I think the same would hold true for eBay. If all of the relatives are home and they are stuck inside, chances are someone will want to show off the cool stuff they can find for eBay.
And now, will you all join me in a rain dance?

"It hits those of us in the pocketbook that have paid full price expecting to get a price based upon historical supply and demand."
Theoretically anyway! I've never seen it effect my paid listings that ended the following days. Also, some sellers may be listing what they would have listed anyway, just on another day. So that would not effect supply.
The people who paid also got to choose which days to end their auction while the "free listers" had narrow choices between the bad and the worse. So you did receive value for what you paid. I've got auctions ending on Tuesday which is a poor sales day for me, and Thursday when people are gone at the lake!

I'm happy
Found out about FLD here about 30 minutes before going to work. I had no time to write up new listings. I relisted two viable items. Another item, I have 30 of in inventory that I usually list and sell one per week. I listed two to end per day for 3, 5, 7 and 10 day auctions. I have sold three of them so far.
