This picture is on the cover of a book called The Peter Pan Bag, which is about hippies and drugs so I doubt it is Karen Carpenter.

She looks a bit like Paula Prentiss.

Her name isn't given credit inside cover or book? Could be just a model....looks a tad like Maude Adams, model/actress.

Looks a little like Peggy Lipton of the original Mod Squad TV show. Could be just a model like the earlier poster wrote ....

Could it possibly be one of the women from Cagney and Lacey (I don't remember their names) - the one with the dark hair with the weird voice?

Her fame began pre-hippy/drug era.

Copyright date is 1971. The book is on auction now if you want to see a synopsis of it.
I am leaning toward a young Susan Dey. I am just a bit surprised that it could be her. I thought she would attach herself to only wholesome stuff.

Susan Dey used to be addicted to drugs, during her early days.

It doesn't really look like Susan Dey to me. Susan would have been 18 at the time the book was published.
Is there any reason to believe the cover girl is known rather than just an anonymous model?

She looks like Sharon Tate to me--the model/actress who got killed by Charles Manson. But I don't remember the dates, so maybe not.

It looks like Paula Prentiss. She was born in 1939 so that would make her 32 in 1971, and that would make her in the hippi era.
Maybe you don't remember her but she was in Where the Boys Are, The Stepford Wives and The Pink Panther.

If you take a postcard or something, and hold it vertically ( sort of) towards the left side of the face, you'll see that the image is distorted...stretched, or re-sized; to disguise the female's true identity, (before those little blurry black geometric numbers were available) or revealing an encrypted /subliminal Key to Enlightenment hidden in the hidden text of an (as then) hidden Beatles' hidden lyric..hidden in the distorted, and therefore hidden, glare on her (electronically and therefore suspect-ly) manipulated cheeks....
Hey, we all know they put acid in the water supply huh?
A 0.5 generation later, we may put it down to low-budget software feeding lazy pixel-math users..or a low budget "wind tunnel" plastic surgery.
(Maybe the Baby-Boomer client went in with a picture of both Francoise Hardy and Mia Farrow ( the Peyton Place era).
P.S. This is a lot like my face looks when I do it with my fingers and fantasize what a "free face-lift coupon" would do for me, instead of the set of matching suitcases..
