Found a vintage bag from at least pre-1960. How can I tell if it is truly alligator skin, vs. something faux?
Any tips?

...it is easier to tell alligator skin when it is still on the outside of the alligator....

pre 1960 ,if it looks and feel like leather,it is more likely to be genuine leather, just ask an alligator.

If it's genuine Alligator skin, and someone files a complaint with eBay, they will end your auction. Best to play dumb & say you aren't 100% certain in the description.

Alligator skin items are banned on eBay, but they only act on complaints. I've had Victorian gator skin purses yanked that were 100+ years old.

Can you post a close-up pic of the skin?
Some bags are marked on the inside as to what they are--is there a place under the lining that you can easily see the back of the skin? That may give you a better clue as to whether it is stamped leather or a true reptile skin (or faux).

The "retro " faux leathers had a certain " tang " if you pressed the tip of your tongue to it for a few seconds. Bit of a chemical -burn feel.
'Course, if you pressed the tip of your tongue to a 'gator, that could ' burn too !
Aren't we all helpful...?
I'd list it as 'reptile', resembles alligator, but possibly a very large lizard...( if it is real skin ).

Well, I emptied the bag of all its 1960 newspapers (wadded up to hold form) and checked and it has a stamping inside on the lining that says "USE GATOR" or "VIC GATOR" (it's in script and hard to read at the angle).
I've written to Brunswick (the makers of the bowling bag) to inquire about it and see if they keep historical catalogs, etc.

While I know you were probably joking... was there a bowler named Vic Gator?
I'm from 1966 and this thing predates me.

If this bag is from the 1960's, I think it's safe to assume that it is indeed made from Gator skin.

On AW, one never knows where the humor lies. Eureka!
Hope the bag does well.

Hopefully it will be the saving grace of our garage sale outing that weekend.
The bag was a QUARTER!
And then, believe it or not, this 45-year old woman (or so) told me to enjoy the bag, it was her father's.
It was her father's and she sold it for a QUARTER??? YEOW!

Bringing this up again, since I now have a close-up of the bag, as someone requested.
Any ideas?
