This is the first time I've ever done this. I've already mailed the item and was going through my Ebay notebook and realized the buyer paid for insurance. She paid by Billpoint. I will be notifying her that I forgot but how to I go about refunding her for the insurance? And letting her know about my mistake. Thanks.

I see this a little differently. The insurance is to insure that the item gets there safely, correct? Let's say you wait a few days to allow some time for the package to arrive and then you email and check to make sure everything is good. At that point you can apologize for your error and offer to refund the cost of insurance. Maybe I am jaded, but it would be easy for someone to take advantage if they know that there is no insurance and that you feel responsible for that. Might make that package dissapear. It might be smarter to wait and then deal with the refund after the fact.

ashlandtrader... if you wanna call it jaded, ok by me. I'd call it cautious. I'd call it "self-insured" actually and only refund if the buyer remarked. Which it in effect was since you know if the buyer emailed it never arrived you would have refunded...... there's your insurance right there. But, if buyer does email, just reply calmly, "sorry, I don't get many insurance payments, I slipped up."

I know how you feel,
That has happened to me a few times, since I ship a lot of packages at one time the sticker might have fallen of the package saying add insurance.
When I notified all my buyers of there item being shipped, that's when I notices one went out without ins.
I said nothing to the buyer, I saw no reason to I always asked them to contact me and let me know there item arrived safely and if they are happy.
So I waited until they contacted me, if all was good there would be not mention
of my omitting insurance, if a problem I would self insure and take care of the shipping and cost of item.
The bottom line is say nothing wait and see the end results.

I started self insuring this January when the postal rates increased. Haven't had a problem yet. I put the money that people pay for insurance aside to pay claims & it works out fine. I've had 2 damaged items & you can get the money refunded immediately instead of all the hassle at the post office. I state the cost of shipping including insurance in my auction description and don't even mention that I provide the insurance as a "caution". No one in over a hundred transactions has even mentioned it to me. If they do, I'd tell them that I self insure & provide much better service than the post office for the same price!

I agree your way is a good way, except, if there is an expensive item I am
sending out I would insure it threw the post office,
All other items below $50.00 value I think I am going to start doing it your way
Not only because It would make my customers happy to know there refund is coming quicker and with less hassle, it would make for happier customers!
I do believe strongly about keeping my customers happy, "to a point" I have had only 2 clams made because of postal damage and it was a time consuming process,

You made another good point about the more expensive items. I forgot to mention that I do use the post office for those items. And you are absolutely right about happier customers. Both of the people that I refunded couldn't believe how easy it was, and how quickly they received their money! Both left glowing feedback.

I have never though to do what you suggested, I'm glad I checked in this morning I like learning better ways to make my customers happy, my feedback is important to me. And your right, it will help your feedback also, because some people don't bother to leave feedback after the hassle they went threw for a refund.
Maybe now they will, since there money is coming quickly.
