I need to cpoyright a little something that I have written - can anyone tell me where, how etc - looking for the cheapest way possible

The material that you have written was copyrighted the moment you created it. All you have to do is be able to prove when it was created. This is what I do:
Send a copy of the work to YOURSELF via registered mail. When it arrives, sign for it but DO NOT open it or break the seal. Put it in a safe place until such time as you need to prove ownership rights. When that time comes, you're prepared. This procedure has saved my butt a couple of times.

The previous post is right.
If you want to go the whole nine yards on the copyright issue, however, have a look at the Copyright Office's site. If you go to the Library of Congress' web site, which I think is www.loc.gov, there should be a link on the home page to the Copyright Office. That will tell you all you need to know (and probably more!) about the formal copyright process.
