I found a vintage (I am guessing 60's to 70's) womans coat at a thrift shop. There are no tags except for a union tag..intl ladies garment union.
Would that tag alone place this coat within a certain period? It is in remarkable condition, looks unworn and I am hoping it is truly a vintage piece..but can't tell.
I didn't think they use those union tags anymore on garments.
Can anyone help me identify the time period on this coat?

it's 1966.
Early '66, I'd say April, probably around the 18th. Well, let's just say between the 15th and 20th. A fine vintage coat, to be sure.
Just toying with you to give you a bump and keep you on top jlady. But honestly it does look like a coat I had in '71, dry and bracing, yet fun and memorable. It went well with trips to the library and walking my spaniel but was overpowering for PTA meetings.
I think it cut off my circulation a bit, tight around the neck at times. Oh, well.
What does the label look like? Is the fiber stated? care instructions? Are the labels PRINTED or is the wording on the labels all woven into it? What's the date on any money in the pockets?

looks early to mid 70's to me. i'm not positive, but believe they stopped putting union labels in clothing sometime in the late 70's.

How long is it? If very short--mini length, I would say late 60's early 70's. It looks like one I had during that time frame but everything was SUPER short at that time. I own blouses now that are longer than the dresses I wore then.
The coat looks like one that would have been worn with high white plastic boots--very chic--or so we thought!

I got married in 1969, and had a similar coat in bright red at that time. I'd definitely say late 1960s-early 1970s.
And BTW, that's a windowpane plaid, not houndstooth check.
The length measurement from back neck seam (where it joins the collar) to hemline will give you an idea of vintage as well. The shorter it is, the more of a "minicoat" and thus earlier in the era. If it's knee-length or longer, it's probably later...or possibly early 1960s, before things got so "mini."

Oooo please tell me that the 70s is not considered vintage now! My mother-in-law had a coat exactly like this.
kittykittykitty Hopefully they stopped making coats like this in the late 70s <LOL>
jadejim I can relate to that. I used to have to put a book behind me to walk up the stairs at school or else you'd be able to see all the way to my neck!

No flames to what I'm about to say.....
I won't address the time period, oh heck yes I will. Its either late 60's or very early 70's. More likely late 60's.
However, during that time period, this union label *usually* implied inferior quality. The fabric was not as good, and the sewing had obvious mistakes. If either my friends or I saw that label, we passed it by and chose a garment without it.
