Do "kits" that contain one book or a tape along with other non-media such as compass, ruler qualify for media mail? This kit can be listed on both half.com and Amazon Marketplace.

In my opinion, they do, but if you asked 25 postal employees, you'd probably get 25 different opinions. I'd just send them that way and not worry about it, since the items are accessories that actually came with the kit.

From the postal service website:

"Generally used for books (at least eight pages), film (16 mm or narrower), printed music, printed test materials, sound recordings, play scripts, printed educational charts, loose-leaf pages and binders consisting of medical information, and computer-readable media. Advertising restrictions apply."

You'd probably be ok as long as you stay away from the advertising restrictions. There can't be any advertising material in the publications or inserts. I'd like to hear an official statement on whether mixed items can qualify for media mail but I don't imageine you'd have any problems.

Technically, I beleive the answer to this question would be no, you can not use media mail if the package includes anything other than the items specifically mentioned. The reason being, if they allowed this, I could stretch this and claim that I was sending a book and computer-readable media....the computer was just an accessory that comes with the media (using this method, I could send anything media rate).

I don't know what the real answer is acutionee but I inititally thought along the same lines as you until I also asked about gift cards. Cash can not be insured but a gift card can. I could easily save the original receipt of the amount purchased, use the entire card up, insure and mail it and file a claim. Instand refill. Logically the PO makes no sense to me.
