Here's a good one - Had a customer send a check to me, from Canada. They added "U.S." to the check. Guess they figured that's all they had to do to pay in US funds. Hopefully they will send an international money order, or pay with credit card.

Postal m.o. works great as there is no fee to cash them.

Here is their reply, all for a lousy $20
-----
For the last 20 years I have purchased items from the US and paid for
them in this way (writing a cheque drawn on a Canadian bank &
stipulating US funds). This is the first time this has been a problem. I
will send you a US money order (at my cost) if you so desire (after my
cheque is returned). Please do not expect any further business from
myself.
I would suggest you post correctly that you DO NOT accept personal
cheques from Canada in the future.
p.s. Is not 'false advertising' against e-bay's rules?

It has been some time, but I have recieved checks from canada where the buyer wrote US funds on it. I took it to my bank and didn't have a problem. If it did not have US funds then they wouldn't convert it from Canadian, but if it is on there I believe it is okay.
You might consider asking your bank?

My bank (credit union) would not accept even a MO in US funds from a Canadian Bank. It seems the numbers on the bottom of the MO or check don't compute with our banking system. However, for a fee of $22, I could deposit it. I sent it back and received an International Postal Money Order which I had asked for in the first place, and the local PO cashed.
What other countries can offer Int'l Postal Money Orders to the US, since I don't accept cc.?

Yep!
My bank says they'd charge $30.00 if I deposited something like that!
It has to say "Payable in USD thru...(names a USA bank)" with the routing numbers below, or they reject it!

ashlander, the 2 banks I went to refuse to cash any overseas check, especially ones where the signer put US on the dollar amount, unless I pay them a 20 dollar fee! Are you sure your bank didnt charge you 20 dollars without telling you each time you cashed those Canadian checks?

I did talk to my bank, and they assured me it was okay (although last time I tried this a couple of years ago, it bounced back to me) - We'll see, looks like I annoyed a buyer for no reason. Not exactly worried about repeat sales from one person. Well, he has a +1 feedback, so if I get negged, it won't look good.

Yeah, I'm sure. I haven't had many and I remember I did have to stand there for a long time while they figured out how to put it into their computer, but they never charged me. I have switched banks a couple times since then though so now I will talk to my current bank before it comes up for me again and causes a problem.
I am really glad I read this post! I learn something new all of the time.

We received a check two days ago drawn on a Canadian Bank with the letters US written by the amount. The bank told me if they processed it there would be a 30 day hold AND that I would get the canadian rate (about half what the customer owes me!) not that amount in US funds. The bank told me if the check had been drawn on a canadian bank that had US and Canada info printed on it then they could accept it just like it was....but NOT one drawn on a Canadian bank only. Unless I'd be willing to wait 30 days for half my money.
Hmmmm...let me think. No, I do believe my answer is NO!
Have a great weekend all.

The rules vary from bank to bank.
Some banks would have no problem accepting this check, others would.
Some banks don't charge an NSF fee, others do, and the amount varies from bank to bank.
Some banks charge a fee for depositing Canadian Postal MO's in US funds, some don't.
Your Canadian bidder did nothing wrong, as obviously he/she has done this many times in the past with no problems.
I've never understood why "some" banks are so reluctant to accept money? Mine will take pretty much anything I bring to them, and they also don't charge me if a check goes NSF.

The one time I got a check like this, I e-mailed the Canadian bank. They said it was fine, but advised me to highlight or underline the "U.S. dollars" to make sure they didn't miss it.
I then asked my bank, and they said as long as the numbers at the bottom were in a U.S.-compatible format, it would be fine.
And it was.

I've sent many a cheque from my CDN bank to US with U.S. funds written after the amount...never had a problem. Can't believe your banks give you such trouble over CDN cheques (IMO, if the writer of the cheque states their desire to have the amount in US$$, it shouldn't be a problem).
From now on, I will do my utmost to avoid writing CDN cheques to the US...save you Yanks some headaches!!
By the way, my bank is a credit union, which tends to give trouble with account #'s being different from the big branches, so I'm even more surprised I've never had problems before.
