This has never happened to me before.

Last Saturday I shipped an insured package via US Mail.

I lost the receipt.

The package has still not been delivered to
the proper destination - normally a 3 day
delivery time.

Our local Post Office is small and has the new IBM 'point of sale' computer system.

Am I out of luck or can someone there pick up the shipping number out of the database?

I'm sure that the package I sent was the only one logged between 9am and 10 am that was going to Olathe, Kanasas.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know the procedure/answer before I head down there tomorrow morning.

Fortunately for me, this package was a personal package and not ebay related but I always respect 99.9% of the advice I read in this forum.

I can't believe I lost the slip but I've turned the house upside down and it's nowhere to be found.

Thanking you in advance,

Nanker

You get two receipts when you mail an insured package.
The insurance receipt (green for under $50 or blue for over $50)
And the register receipt for payment which will show the zip code address each item was mailed to. This will also show the insurance payment.

You lost both?

capotasto,

Thanks for your reply, and thank you dman3.

There is no better lesson learned than the lesson learned through experience.

In the PAST, I have always kept the blue ticket and tossed the register receipt.

This time, I lost the bloody blue ticket.
The receipt from the register was tossed into the trash can at the post office.

Believe me, I won't throw the register receipt away again - nor will I lose the
blue ticket!

I just want to believe that they can pull their records and find that number. It may well be that I'm out $500+ on this one.

"There is no better lesson learned than the lesson learned through experience."

And so we all learn. It's the only way, the best way.

But since everything is now computerized, it should be in their database. Check with the postmaster.

it does not matter whether it is in their data base or not-no tickee,no washee!
but then the parcel may just arrive ,give it time.
since this is personal package, tell them to watch for it

If it was a green ticket, and you lost it, you would be SOL. From direct experience.

For the blue ones, I agree that it should be in the computer somewhere since they are now scanning them. Inquire with your post office buddies tomorrow.

500.00 then it's a blue one. I think you have a good chance of the PO having a copy of this on their computer.

I know what NankerPhlege is.

You must be a Rolling Stones fan.

Any chance that the package is simply overdue? It happens from time to time.

Even if you had the ticket the PO will not start processing a claim for a while. They want you to give it 3 or 4 weeks (can't remember the exact time frame).

Thanks for all the replies, friends....and now I head to the Post Office and see if they're in HELP mode or ******** mode.

The package shipped last Saturday to Olathe, KS from North Texas. I have a friend with whom I swap collectibles that lives in Kansas City and he most always gets packages in 3 days.

I shall let you folks know what transpires
and I appreciate (again) the helpful nature of this group.

**Update**

Knowing how my temper and how my mind works
I thought it would be easier for me and the Post Office if I would call before I went in.

I called and got three different answers. The first answer was from the 'guy in the back' and he thought it was possible to look up the number in the computer for a BLUE ticket, but he'd have to ask the counter-lady who had been there 150 years.

Counter Lady says, "NO TICKET, NO CHANCE".
{she's been programmed well, don't you agree?}

THEN, it was to the supervisor. Bill says that it should be possible (he hedges himself to say that he's not too sure...) but that the Post Master would be in Monday morning and she would know more about it.
He admits it would be a MONUMENTAL TASK to go through all that information that is on the database (ah-ha!)and that it PROBABLY could be done but it would be a Monumental task.. Notice that he said this twice.

Oh well, that is where the story HERE ends until Monday morning. If you can read between the lines like I can read between the lines - the BOTTOM LINE is that they can do it if they want to do it.

And the only person to blame here is me because I'm the jackass who lost that little blue ticket - had I not lost that then all would be tolerable.

I would love to hear from people who have had success with the Post Office regarding losing a blue slip. It would be more ammo for me when I deal with the Post Master.
And it looks like it will come down to her decision - I'll have to put some Tom Hopkins moves on her and sell the idea because I'm sure that this is the LAST thing she will want to do.

Again, if you have any experience with the P.O. and a situation such as this with a BLUE ticket, I'd love your .02

Kindest Regards,

Nanker

Since I work for the PO I'll tell you what I know.

We don't have computers. For insured we have the green slip for under $50 and the blue slip for over $50.

We keep NO RECORDS of it going out.

The blue slip is scanable but it is only scanned when its delivered.

So I can't see how it can be traceable.

With the computer entry you may stand a chance.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply Packer!

Again, it's MY FAULT for losing that cursed receipt. I know that and that is what really makes me mad. I've shipped thousands of insured packages and this is the first receipt I've lost that I needed.

I hope they are of a mind to help, IF they can help.

Sincerely,

Nanker
