I just received a returned package in the mail and it is marked "refused" and they wrote deceased on the form. I don't know what to do. I don't feel right keeping the item that I have been paid for. Any ideas?

Are you sure you have been paid for it?
Personal check
MO
POMO
CC
?
If indeed you have been paid you could remail it to "Family of..." with an explanatory note.

This could also be a scam by [pardon the pun,] a deadbeat. They may be looking for a way out.[Buyers remorse]
Might not be long before you get an e mail asking for a refund.
Do not remail parcel till you know for a fact what is going on.
Yes I know, Its the kind of world we all live in.

Thanks for the advice. I did send an email explaining that she had paid $29.99 for the item and that I would like to send the money back to the family. I asked for a name and address to send it to. Hopefully I will hear back. I do not feel comfortable calling. I feel terrible. I checked my old emails and she had mentioned she was having hand surgery. I guess there were complications. So sad.

They is a very good chance that no one will check her email.
The family may be unaware of her ebay shopping.
I suggest you call or drop a note in the mail address to the family of XXX. Explain the situation.
Have you checked this persons resent ebay activity? Are they still bidding? Contact any of the other resent sellers? Ask them if they had the package returned.

Top ten things you can do when your high bidder dies...
1. Your item is cursed and anyone who bids on it dies. Get rid of it!
2. Burn it on an altar
3. Ship it to:
Heaven
123 Angle Way
Heaven City, Clouds 00000
or if the buyer has a lot of bad bad feedback
Hell
123 Pokemewithapitchfork Ave.
Hell, Underworld 666
4. The next time you get some excuse from a deadbeat..send him back a e-mail that says even dead people find a way to pay me..why can't you???!
5. Put a feedback that says
"Dead but still super fast payment A++++ poor communication Must hold seance to get shipping address"
6. Add a testimonial in all your auction that says dead people love my items.
7. Call the psychic friends hotline and ask them what you should do with the item.
8. Send it to John Stewart
9. Donate it to a charity in the persons name
10. Relist!
Sorry, but I just had these ideas. Ideas I have without coffee are subject to change without notice.

Personally, I think it is a bit of buyer's remorse.
OK - the auction ended less than 30 days ago - a package arrives in the mail, postpaid. You are at the house and are not gonna open it? Not a wee bit interested in knowing what is inside?
Not me - I'd tear that baby open to see what was bought After all, you might just see that Uncle Jim collected S & M leather

I don't believe this is buyer's remorse. She paid with a money order. She had great feedback until recently. I don't know why the person at the house returned the package, but nobody is asking for any money back. This person also mentioned that she was having surgery on the 12th, so it makes me feel there were maybe some complications and she died.

PLEASE DON"T CALL THEM. Going through this is very upsetting & one of the worst things is when you keep getting phone calls for the person who has suddenly died. Sounds like this was unexpected & a phone call is like pouring salt on an open wound. Sending the money back to the "family of" is the correct thing to do. Just my 2 cents - been there done that.

Margaret: Thanks for the laugh, I needed it this early on a Monday morning. But who is John Stewart? You should send this list to The Late Show with David Letterman. I bet he'd read it on the air!!!
