For the folks using Win NT or Win 2000 only, a virus patch is available. The virus attacks at 8PM EST for the first 20 days of the month and will most likely slow the internet and sites like Ebay if the patch is not installed on major servers or Win NT and 2000 home users. Here is a link to CNN report and they have the link to Microsoft for the correct patch for your System.

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/07/30/code.red/index.html

This virus does not effect Win 95 or 98 systems however it is expected to slow down the internet so Ebay sales may be down this week.

I just posted 50 auctions last night so I am not real pleased with this prospect.

The download only takes less than a minute.

Good luck all....

I tried finding out if Windows ME would be affected and where/what I should do and I couldn't find ANYTHING on Microsoft about it....sigh.

Can anyone help me? I also have the free version of Zone Alarm installed and running.

Should I cancel my auctions?

Thanking you in advance,
Pania

QUOTE:

"The rogue application takes advantage of a defect in Microsoft's Internet Information Services software. It affects only computers with the IIS Web server software and Window's NT or 2000 operating systems. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me are immune. Therefore, most home PCs cannot be infected."

This is a bug that affects SERVERS, not us!

Zone Alarm doesn't do a thing about viruses. It is fairly decent protection against hackers. (I run it my self)

If you are depending on zone alarm to protect you from viruses, you need to get some good anti-virus software. I use McAfee, but Norton is also good. You also need to have the latest updates for either.

Code Red won't infect your machine, but there is a nasty email virus (SirCam) running around right now that can.

Thank you so much!!

I was really concerned about it..my husband is in Canada on business and called to be sure and find out if it would affect our home computer!

I didn't know Zone Alarm wasn't virus protection! I'll check the others out.

Sincerely,
Pania

We have been told to turn our computers off. Still waiting for the attack.

Zone Alarm has been VERY quite. I normally get a few pings here and there, and some "can't respond" messages. Zone Alarm hasn't given me a single alert in HOURS. Seems NOBODY is sending any more traffic than they need to tonight.

I have no plans whatsoever to worry about my Win98 machine or turn it off. There's no reason, other than I might be inconvienced if my favorite sites go down.

The Sircam virus is, I believe, a more serious threat to people posting here. I have received it a few times now. From viewing the SMTP headers, I get the impression that this virus is being mass broadcast by people with too much time on their hands.

you don't have to worry about this on with Win98. There may be some servers go down.

A lot of servers are running Unix, and they're immune to this one too. (I checked, and my Picture server is Unix. My pic's in my auctions should be fine.)

As long as your copy of NT doesn't have IIS Web server software installed, you are ok.

Sorry kids, I need some help. My Mom (senior citizen) just called to ask me why her computer is shut down. She saw a TV report that a new virus can do that. She has a new computer (6 mo old). She uses Earthlink for a carrier.

I am in her address book many times and have not received an *advice* email from her. So I don't think it is sircam, HAS earthlink been adversly affected by code red worm?

Thanks in advance.... just a couple of old bags trying to puzzle things out.....
