I have been selling on Ebay for a couple of years. Could someone please explain how the following could happen. I start an auction for 10 days on a Thursday, Dutch format (35) quantity, minimum bid of $10.75. On Saturday someone bids $20 for all 35. The bid history states that. On Sunday the same person Bids $40 for all 35 and the bid history show only 1 bid, by 1 person and no bid retractions. If the same person bids twice, should'nt the amount of bids change to two.
Someone please explain.

If the same person bid twice then the amount would not change. They probably reconsidered their maximum bid and placed another one to make reasonably sure they won the auction. When someone is the only bidder, all the second bid does is increase their proxy, as eBay's system doesn't allow bidders to up the ante on their own bids.

Now, if someone else bids they will have to beat the top proxy bid if they want to win the item.

Not sure if this explains it. Perhaps someone else could help you out a bit better with this one.

valuemet-

I would be willing to bet that your bidder (who just joineed eBay last week) doesn't understand how dutch auctions work. When he finds out that he'll be expected to pay $40 each for items that can be easily found for $10, he's probably going to be surprised.

Agreed, you might want to contact this bidder and make sure they understand that they are not bidding on all 35 for 40.00, but 35 TIMES $40.00!

Mizteek...

Dutch auctions do NOT use "Proxy" bidding...!!!

It is almost a sure thing that the bidder does not realize they have to pay $40 bucks for each of the 35 items...

Sorry for the misinformation

I hardly ever buy or sell using the Dutch Auction format, so it was good to get this info clarified for me, as well as for valuemet.
