Hello. I have a quick question that perhaps someone can lend some advice to. We sell mainly sports trading cards. On our larger orders, of course we send out priority and with insurance. But some are stating that on our smaller sales items, you know the same old story. I did not get, etc. So since we use Paypal on a majority of our payments, (and never had a problem yet) what would you suggest on shipping items that have a sale price of $3.00 and under (value) and shipping cost is $0.80 to $1.75? Would you now state that it would cost priority shipping and cost of insurance just to protect yourself in case of a lost item in the future? How do you handle your smaller items that people pay with Paypal. Thanks for the advice. John

priority shipping and cost of insurance

That won't fly with PayPal. They require online trackable proof of shipping, and insurance (at least, under $50) doesn't provide that.

I would say to consider the value of your time spent standing in line at the post office. For me, I would rather just pay the person and build insurance into my S&H cost. I have only had a couple of people claim missing out of 2000+ items mailed. Ask them to fill out the post office or UPIC affidavit.

Another option might be to get hooked up with Endicia.com and use their free delivery confirmation. Many have reported on this board that the "mysterious missing packages" suddenly appear whenever the buyer is given the DC number. This would at least save you the time, although you would have to send them on Priority Mail (or possibly Media Mail?)

Also you can get low cost insurance at www.u-pic.com

I charge a small premium over actual shipping cost and I insure every package except on low cost items and I self insure those. If it gets lost, I will send a replacement if available or else a refund...

Two rules... 1) Don't sweat the little stuff

2) Everything is little stuff...

I have asked PP and been told by PP, that they would require an online trackable means to verify that I did indeed send the package.

As I understand it, however, even if you can prove you sent a package using DC or an insurance number for items OVER $50, you may still be subject to a chargeback for any number of other reasons. Even if the card holder refused the insurance and you can prove that, but the item supposedly gets lost or damaged, you still may be subject to a chargeback. Why? Most cc's allow their users to reverse charges for a multitude of reasons. I do not believe PP cannot stop a cc user from requesting a reverse of charges for any reason allowed by the cc company. A user may be in violation of the TOS with PayPal if they do that, but they can do it! PayPal must play by the cc companies rules. I am suppose to play by PP's rules, but if I have too, I'll go to my cc company in a heart beat. PayPal may cancel my account, but they can't stop the chargeback, if my cc company deems it allowable!

PayPal may guarantee you, as a seller using of their service, that IF you are verified and IF you only send to verified addresses and IF you send by a method that is trackable and can prove it was mailed, THEN they will not hold you responsible for a chargeback that comes in as "item never received". However, I have found nothing in their TOS that says they will protect me against ALL other types of chargebacks.

My cc company allows me to reverse a charge if the item is substandard (I get to decide) or if I feel it was misrepresented (I get to decide) or if I simply return it but don't get my money back by a credit to my card, then I can ask my cc company to get me my money back! I love my cc company! That's why I will only make internet purchases with a cc. I will not exercise my rights to do a chargeback unless there is no other recourse, but I will NOT be "cheated" either.

On the other hand, I feel pretty sure that if I started demanding reversals on most of my cc purchases, my cc company would cancel my card. Afterall, they don't make money unless I keep the item and make them my monthly payments!

I personally believe that if you are going to accept cc payments, than you will always be subject to a possible chargeback. You have to decide if the benefits outway the possible problems. I for one think they do. Of course, if I do get a chargeback against my account, I may feel differently!
