I have a question that no one seems to be able to answer very clearly for me. I see a lot of auctions for lps listed with "first pressing". I would like to know how you can tell if a record is a first pressing. Can someone help me?

Thank you very much dman3. That is the best answer I have ever gotten to this question. Sounds like unless it has a upc or is like you mentioned (best of..etc) it has a good chance of being a first pressing.

According to my hubby it is the serial numbers that will identify first pressings. Of course, for the information to be helpful you must also have a book (or perhaps a website) that points out which serial numbers of each particular album are which.

Hi..get a copy of Jerry Osbornes book on records. Some lps or 45s were pressed several times. His book is pretty decent at identifying them. For instance some of elvis presleys lps were pressed 15 or 20 times throughout the years. Some 45s you go by the trail off number in the dead wax. Qsbornes book is available at most major book stores. I think his newest one is called records 2001. Or you can get it off his website at www.jerryosborne.com.
