Netscape 6.1 is finally prime time and it seems fairly good. With Quick Launch it rivals IE in speed. If I can make it work somehow with Outlook (you can do that with the older versions using Navigator or Communicator with a hack) I might switch.

Anyone else try it?

I used the beta version and hated it - jumped straight back to 4.7 as soon as I saw how slow the beta was. I may have to try the completed version.

With the Quick launch it really is much faster.

I've been running the beta for a couple of months now. Didn't realize it's been officially released, but I'm downloading it now.

I encountered a few bugs in the beta, but overall I like it a lot more than IE (which I hate with a passion) and the older versions of Netscape. It ran a bit slow for me at first, but I tossed some extra memory into my machine and now I don't notice much of a difference.

I also tried the beta and HATED it. Seems like the viewing window is getting smaller and smaller. I like 4.7, though Netscape is so much more buggy than ie

Downloaded, installed... and very happy. It's much faster than the beta, and seems to run smoother too.

ahc3 -- you can tweak the settings so you don't lose so much of the screen. I was a bit dismayed when I first saw it, but I've tweaked it around so I don't lose anymore space than I did with the older versions of Netscape.

mballi -- what's the quick launch? Is it included, or does it have to be downloaded separately?

Quick Launch is under the preferences/advanced options I believe. You click on it, and reboot to get it going. It puts the essential components into your startup and puts an Icon in your system tray. It might a couple of seconds startup time, but it's barely noticeable. Then click on it and...near instant Netscape browser!

The only minus on the 6 and up Netscape browsers is that they use more memory. I've said it before but it's worth repeating: if you haven't already done so, get more memory, you'll never believe the difference it can make.

Just made it work with Outlook. I uninstalled the original setup and reinstalled it without the mail component.

BTW this is supposed to be the only browser with an email client that can work with AOL. If your machine can run this one, it might be just the ticket if you are on AOL.

I just dumped it. I got it the day it came out. When you bookmark an auction, all you see is item number and date auction ends
no description as you do in earlier Netscape versions. You can write in a description manually but that is pesky. I wrote customer
service and they said you just get the url
when you bookmark. Why is it on earlier
netscapes you get the description automaticly
when you bookmark? Anyway thats why I dumped it. I am about to go to IE at least you can
hold mouse over numbers and get description.
I think it was hurried on to market. If they
waited till mozilla 1 was perfected they may
have had a great product. So I check
mozilla.org every now and then to see how they are doing. they are up to version 93..

I just bookmarked one of my auctions--it shows at least a partial title--the full title is in the name when you view it under manage book marks.

netscape is really somewhat troublesome to load. I know 6.1 supports basically everything that IE does. But for stats, only 1% out of the 17% ppl who use netscape have netscape 6.1

Quick Launch loads 6.1 very fast. Since 6.1 has only been out since last week, it will take awhile for the word to get out. It's very stable and I only use IE now when Microsoft apps start it. I would take IE off my machine but Office 2000 uses it sometimes.

Are you using the sidebar to view bookmarks?
Or up at the top? That was the main reason I dumped it. If there is a way you can view
bookmark names even partial that is encouraging. I custom installed but I still got alot of pesky aol stuff I later deleted.
One other problem I had;my isp kept disconnecting me when I used it. Couldnt figure out why; mail was set to check every 2 min. Finally downloaded Stay Alive. I was thinking of trying Opera. Netscape 6.1 is a
good browser if I could figure out the quirks

Bookmarks appear to show at least a partial title on top. Under manage bookmarks you can see the whole title if you widen the name column. I don't know if this is different for you perhaps because of monitor size or something else. I'm using a 17" monitor.

Judging software is always a bit of a leap. 6.1 seems very stable--more than IE--and the interface is more pleasant IMHO.

Does Quick Launch make pages load any faster or does it only make the Netscape application open faster?

While in most cases there is no difference, there seem to be a number of sites that appear to be designed for the IE browser that take forever to load on Netscape (I believe half.com is one). I have both (but hate IE) and have done several comparisons. I have ADSL at near T1 speeds so I know it isn't my connection.

I'm finding half and eBay to be better with Netscape overall, but half is just plain slow--they really need to beef up their servers.

Quick launch is mainly for startup speed. Windows loads IE components by default unless you have stripped IE out of your system. Speedwise I find both browsers roughly as fast.
