I'm about to tackle a huge pile of sheet music that has been sitting in storage for a couple of years. Am planning on selling it in large lots (50 or more) just to get it out of the way. Other than playing the piano a bit, and a short high school jazz-band stint, my sheet music experience is null. What are your recommendations for sorting into categories? (The first category, of course, will be stuff in less-than-very-good condition, which I won't put in the auctions).

who-wee,
I'd like to know also, as I have recently discovered a huge pile of sheet music I got a couple of years ago.
I was thinking of running them in lots of 100 mix em up(most are from early 1900's)for $1 NR.
But if I can get a clue to how better to run them.....GREAT!

Isn't there a books/music category?....If they have good/decent looking artwork on the covers, you might wanna put some in "crafts" for the decopaugers (sp?)...

I think sometimes I over-categorize too much...
I recently sold about half of a large collection of sheet music on ebay, and some lots that I thought would have sold well, had NO interest...
I do know that collectors of sheet music are after different things... some collect styles of music (ragtime, swing etc.), others collect categories (patriotic, big band), some collect because of the stars on the cover (Doris Day, Bing Crosby), others collect the artist covers.... it goes on and on. THe only stuff I sold well was the patriotic stuff, everything else sold for about $2.00 per piece and I had a lot of left overs...
Maybe a mixed grab bag is best -- I don't know...

fonthill -- was that $2 per piece of music, or $2 per lot (of more than one piece)?? I'd be pretty dern happy at $2 per piece of music because there is sooooooo much of it.
I've done a little browsing of completed auctions, and noticed that the pre-1920's stuff didn't seem to move well. Maybe I'll just clear a huge space on the living room floor and sort by some kind of Zen-feeling.

Islander - that is $2.00 per piece (on average) The patriotic stuff sold well (about $4.00 - $8.00 each), I had some racist black cover stuff that didn't sell at all (although I wanted $10.00 each for those because the last time I sold one like that it went for $45.00). I had some Disney sheet music that sold really well as well (about $15.00 each), the rest of the stuff went in lots for about $10.00 -$15.00 each lot (with about 8 - 12 pieces in each lot).

Im no expert but I do browse that area as a
buyer. If the cover is early 1900s and is
printed with more than 3 colors.
Attractive..frameable..1900 to 1930s or so,
You can get from 5.99 to 15.99 for
it. Put Great Cover! Nice cover, Great Artwork. Or let me know. There are people like myself that collect the artwork.

How huge is your 'pile' of sheet music ? I am always interested in obtaining additional box lots.
If you can give us an est. of the number of sheets you have, we will make an offer. Please tell us also from where will it be shipped and how much your 'pile's weight.
Be sure to visit our virtual store @ MDEonline.net !

dcm -- I'll try to get all the boxes together today or tomorrow and get an estimate of the number of pieces. It's gotta be in the 100's, many if not most in plastic sleeves.
