I have a customer that wants me to ship COD. Are there any drawbacks to this? How does the carrier return the money? Next day, second day? In person? Thanks.

the main disadvantge is the customer can refuse the shipment then you are stuck with shipping costs both ways.

bigest draw backs to COD is you pay extra fees for the service and the buyer must be home to exsept the package or they will return it to you.

keep in mind even with COD the buyer has to send you a money order for the Postage you COD is for the cost of the Item it still needs postage to be sent...

How does the money actually get returned to me. Fedex allows cash and money orders so I wouldn't accept a check.

The big Thing here is Why Ship COD at all When your buyer must still send you a money order for shipping so you can ship to them COD.

Then You will Require them to pay the Delivery company with Another money order You will pay the shipping Company a percentage for the COD dilivery as well sounds like way more work and money then its worth to me...

Well, if it means making the sale, I will do it since it's a nice chunk for what I'm selling. This stuff has been sitting around the house for years so another week delay won't hurt me. This isn't an Ebay transaction and I'm sure he just isn't comfortable buying something from a stranger he met on a group discussion board.

I did call Fedex and they won't ship COD w/o an account and I've been unable to get through to UPS and USPS is closed and I would like to close the deal tonight. Oh well.

I imagine ups also has agents standing by.

Go to GOggle do a search for ups

I belive usps is usps.gov

I don't belive ups or usps require a account for cod but give em a call to find out for sure. I would have said fedex didnt also but I do have a ccount woith them.

No 1-800-ask USPS isn't open 24/7. I just called and got a "our offices are currently closed".

When I tried UPS, I went through all press 1, and a zillion other numbers and then received a busy signal twice already. I know they are open but I'm not getting through.

Ok I got through to UPS--

They do it w/o an account. Costs $6.00. They only accept MO or checks and not cash like Fedex. They mail the money back via US Mail. I asked what happens if it's lost. They said they would have the PO put a tracer on it (that gives me a warm fuzzy) and he really didn't know what happens after that point. (this is why I ask auctionwatch members-they know more) They try for 3 consecutive days and then return it to sender.

Yeah, and if the check is no good, your merchandise is long gone days before you even get a chance to deposit the check. If it's an expensive item (like a laptop), be careful.

If you are going to do a COD (which is highly UNrecommended!) then ask for a USPS Money Order. But you are still taking chances and if they are willing to purchase a money order then why not just send it to you and save the $6 for COD? Something's usually fishy about people wanting a COD now days when the carriers won't accept cash...

CODs are a relic from the pre-credit card era. They have absolutely no--and I mean no--merit for a transaction today and should never be used. CODs basically cost you money upfront which is reason alone not to do them. If they can't send you the money, you can't send the stuff.

In the very rare cases I've been asked about doing COD, the buyers proved to be a pain. IMHO COD=DEADBEAT. If someone wanted to do COD, I would charge an extra $25 fee and that would have to be paid upfront. Guarantee that the person would just cough up the money if they were serious.
