I sold to someone in Hong Kong
Ok, he emailed me first, which I told him OK
Well he won. So I weigh the item (camera and accessories) comes to 5 pounds 8 oz, with packing it well, I added one more pound, which brought it to 6 pounds 8 oz.
I went to try out the USPS calculator (again, its ALWAYS wrong when I do it, I've eaten shipping to Canada quite a few times)
It says: for a package weighing 6 pounds 8 oz cost is :
Global Express: (3-4 days) $44.
Air (4-7 days) $40.
Surface Economy (4-6 weeks)$24.
Does it really cost this much? that sure sounds VERY high to me.... but that is what I came up with for International, then Hong Kong, then the weight.....
Any int'l sellers pay this much in shipping?
Is that website wrong? www.usps.com
Thanks!

I will print out the page and bring it.... every time I have used that calculator, and just for Canada, it said something like $6. I got charged $11.

The calculator has always worked for us. It sounds like you are being gouged by your local post office.

The reason it comes out different is because they are sending it by a different method then you found online...
Letter rate air is the lowest air rate the PO offers for packages internationally..
Surfice is not nessarilly the lowest rate anymore depending on weight and size..

Yes, and "letter rate air" sounded for sure to me as though they meant I had to be shipping a letter. Finally caught on. Semantics! Adele

Can't comment on the site or the cost of international shipping. But I might suggest that when you send the invoice to the buyer that you tell them the weight of the item and point them to the appropriate webpage that you used to calculate the cost of shipping.
If nothing else you'll be doing the buyer a favour so that they can estimate the cost of shipping in the future...

Nearthesea-- Those are indeed the postal rates to HongKong for a package of that weight.
Once a package is over 4 lbs Airmail Letter Post and Economy (Surface) Letter Post are no longer available. Parcel Post is the ONLY option.

I onced received a small package a US seller inserted into a Global Priority Mail - Flat-rate Envelope (large)
.
I don't know how large the camera you sold is, but if you could seperate the camera and accessories into two packages inserted into a Global Priority Mail - Flat-rate Envelope (large)
, each weighing less than 4 lbs they would cost $9.00 each for a total of $18. If it's one of these new small digital cameras it should fit easily.

Hi,
Could I please ask a related question here instead of starting a new thread? I am about to use Bidpay for the first time to someone in Scotland. How long does it take to hear from Bidpay? If I count the weekend, and probably shouldn't, it has been about 4 1/2 days since emailing the customer. I am not in any particular hurry, just wondered.
I have found the scales in the lobby of our year old post office wrong alot. If the weight is really close to the next amount, I stand in line for an official weight. Once they knew the scale was off, but hadn't put up a sign.

No, its not a digital camera. Its got its own case and accessories. The 'accessories' part is probably what weighs most, or maybe the same as the camera, as its a big flash attachment.
I think that is going to be the correct price, it didn't go over the size limits
Now the thing is, since I notified him of the price of shipping, there has been no response, figures he has low feedback, but good feedback, and looking at what he has purchased, has been small items, and low cost. Now I wonder if he thinks I am trying to rip him off in shipping, BUT I did send him the URL to the USPS website, and told him what it weighed packed.
Shoshana, I didn't know you can insure overseas? Can you do any kind of delivery confirmation too?
Thanks

in this case, does shipping in 2 boxes help? each one might qualify for lower rates? sometimes i've had this be cheaper to do, and it sounds like you can split up the merchandise.

I tried the calculator on 3 pounds, which would be splitting it up, either way, I am going to come out the same weight. But I tried it, parcel post 23.25 Surface $21. Global $24
or its too early to think
I need to go to the dentist now. I don't know, I'll figure it out as soon as the guy gets back to me on it...
thanks

Bidpay is the only way to go. I find the service to be great.
Wait till you get the second email from them. Sometimes it can take them anywhere from five minutes to a couple of days.
At that time you can ship.

No doubt International shipping costs are a real problem and preventing eCommerce from really going global. If one of these carriers dropped their International shipping prices significantly it seems they could capture the market and really spur global eCommerce. You have to figure U.S. buyers are only a small fraction of the global population. We're missing out on a ton of buyers who view but can't purchase our wares because of shipping fees and complications.

Further to the note by AnonymousCoward there's also another size of Global Priority package beyond "large". Don't recall the actual designation but it's basically a box. If memory serves me correctly it will take up to 2kg and costs 13 bucks or so
